Cloudy skies taunting rain may have kept some families from venturing out to Luther Crest Bible Camp for the 7th annual Lakes Area Kids’ Day on Saturday but the weather held out for the fortunate few.
Adventure seekers stopped off at the Project Confidence challenge course and others followed a wooded trail to more family fun. Visitors were greeted with an ice cream cone and free flowers to plant at home.
A Culver’s cone count revealed 75 visitors, but Luther Crest Associate Director of Operations Paul Hanson estimated 250 people came out to the event. A crowd of 600 was anticipated.
Children with painted faces roamed through the animal exhibit and community center before emerging out the backdoor to find a pitching tent and dunk tank. Beetles mascot Ringo Radar and Dane The Juggler helped keep kids in high spirits.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office provided fingerprinting and child identification CDs for parents. A fire safety house hosted by the Alexandria Fire Department was stationed on the grounds and the Alexandria Police Department added to the safety theme by distributing informative literature.
As the event wrapped up, three proud new bicycle owners: Tyler Zunkel, Malia Sayre and Ella Sayre, embarked with their prizes before the first drops of rain hit the ground.
