Alex baseball: Rally falls short against Apollo

The Cardinals battled back from four down before falling 5-3 to the Eagles.

Alexandria rallied back from a 4-0 deficit to make the score 4-3, but couldn’t come up with the key hits needed to upend St. Cloud Apollo Tuesday, falling to the Eagles 5-3 in Central Lakes Conference baseball.

St. Cloud Apollo struck in the bottom of the first inning for four runs against starter Beau Backhaus as he gave up three hits in that frame.

“After the first inning was complete, the Cards settled down and played a solid game the rest of the way,” said head coach Russ Hinrichs. “Backhaus held the Eagles in check and off balance with his mix of pitches on the mound.”

Alexandria scored three runs in the top of the third as Nick Knoblach tapped an infield single. He scored as Jordan Domine doubled and Ben Allen singled.

An error allowed A.J. Anderson to reach, and also scored courtesy runner Christian Anderson. Gideon Burnham delivered a two-out single to score Allen for the final run of the stanza.

“The Cards had more chances throughout the game, but were unable to get another clutch hit or two to tie the game,” said Hinrichs. “Beau took the loss on the mound, but again was very good against one of the best teams in the conference.”

Allen had three hits in the game, while Domine and Knoblach each added two.

“The Cards left St. Cloud knowing that we can play and compete against one of the top teams in the section and conference,” said the coach. “Our confidence is high heading into a pair of doubleheaders to end the week.”

The Cardinals faced Fergus Falls yesterday, Thursday, in the first of the doubleheaders and play two against Moorhead today, Friday, at Knute Nelson Memorial Park.
