Alex tennis: Cardinals head into playoffs
Alexandria drops its final two matches to end the regular season.
The Cardinal boys’ tennis team couldn’t finish the regular season with a win, falling to Sartell 5-2 Tuesday.
“It was senior night and we honored our eight seniors – Austin Storm, Mack Wadi, Trevor Grandgenett, Will Harding, Brock Wood, Ben VonBargen, Clayton Cozad and Ryan Johnson,” said head coach Dave Ronning.
The Cardinals picked up their two wins in doubles as Storm and Wadi won at the first spot 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 and Mark Kallevig and Levi Duwenhoegger won at the third spot 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
“Both teams had to play three sets to get the wins, and both won the first sets and dropped the second, only to come back and get the final third set,” said Ronning. “Mark and Levi played some of the best tennis they have played this year, and it was good to see them break through and get a ‘W’.
“Austin and Mack played one of their typical matches, where they started strong. Then they went through a rough period, and then settled in and played their way out of trouble.
“Again, I feel we improved from the first time we played Sartell,” he added. “They took it to us in Sartell, but this match could have gone either way.”
Alexandria finished its regular season with a 7-12 record and begin Sub-section play Tuesday in Brainerd.
