Letter - Should we go back to Middle Ages?
During the Middle Ages, Norwegian stav churches had holes in the wall at which lepers could stand outside the sanctuary to hear the Gospel and receive the sacrament. Could this be a possible solution for present day Christians to accommodate gays, lesbians, bisexuals and the transgendered?
To the editor:
During the Middle Ages, Norwegian stav churches had holes in the wall at which lepers could stand outside the sanctuary to hear the Gospel and receive the sacrament. Could this be a possible solution for present day Christians to accommodate gays, lesbians, bisexuals and the transgendered? It would indicate that they are still loved but still not allow them to worship inside with staunch heterosexuals in good standing with God and the clergy.
Contamination of the faithful must certainly be a consideration in this matter. I simply mention this in hope of resolving a situation that is currently tearing Lutheran synods apart.
Sometimes solutions arrived at in the past work well for the present and the future. If this suggestion can establish Christian unity and brotherhood once again, it is well worth implementing at little cost to anyone involved.
