The Cardinals blanked Rocori, then took a pair from Moorhead

The Cardinal softball team had a busy weekend, taking on Rocori Friday, then traveling to Moorhead for a doubleheader on Saturday, picking up three wins along the way and improving to 11-4 overall and 7-3 in Central Lakes Conference play.

A large part of Alexandria’s success can be attributed to solid pitching and an improved offense.

“Alexandria has won its last nine games and in those games has outscored the opposing teams 84-14,” said head coach Randy Albers. “One of the players who has been swinging a hot bat of late is Lauren Trumm who, in the last nine games, has two home runs, three triples, one double, 12 singles and 13 RBIs.”

The Cards needed just six innings to send Rocori packing as Taylor Ellingson allowed only four hits to the Spartans.

Alexandria’s offense was clicking, scoring three runs in the first inning as Dani Carlson tripled to open the inning, followed by singles to Jess Syvrud, Lauren Trumm and Sarah Bruzek.

The Cards continued to add to their lead with four runs in the third as Syvrud, Trumm, Emily Kuennen and Rachel Peterson all singled, and closed out their 10-0 victory as Carlson led off the sixth with a home run and Dani Strater and Bruzek both singled.

The final two came across the plate as Natalie Berglin got her second game-ending hit of the season.

In all, the Cardinals picked up 15 hits in the game.

The Redbirds added another shutout as they blanked Moorhead 12-0 behind an offensive output of 15 more hits and a stellar performance on the mound by Ellingson.

A three-run homer by Trumm highlighted Alexandria’s four-run first inning, getting the Cardinals off on the right foot.

They added one more in the second and five in the fourth as Trumm capped the inning with a triple.

Their final two runs came in the top of the fifth.

Trumm finished the game with five runs batted in with her two hits and Carlson, Bruzek and Amanda Christianson had two hits each.

Ellingson scattered two lone hits over the five-inning contest, striking out eight.

Emily Kuennen earned the second victory for the day against Moorhead, but the Cardinals had to work just a little harder to accomplish the victory.

They scored early with two in the first inning, but the Spuds returned with one in the bottom of the inning, then tied the game in the fourth.

Alexandria edged ahead with a run in the fifth as Christianson singled home Ellingson, then took a 6-2 lead as the Cardinals scored three times in the sixth on hits by Trumm and Ellingson.

Moorhead made a run at the Redbirds in the bottom of the seventh, scoring twice on a walk and an error, but Alexandria held on for the win.

Alexandria is now 11-4 overall and 7-3 in the conference.
