Area students learn to be safe!

Annual Safety First day camp held last week

The Runestone Electric Association hosted its annual Safety First day camp on Thursday, May 3 at the Runestone Community Center in Alexandria.

About 500 elementary students and teachers from Brandon, Carlos, Evansville, Garfield, LEARN at Home, Lincoln, Miltona, Parkers Prairie, St. Mary’s, Woodland, Voyager and West Central Area schools attended the event.

They first heard a short message on the important of seatbelt safety during the “Klick It For Kelsey” presentation, and then broke apart into different workshop sessions. Each student participated in eight 20-minute sessions, choosing from the following presentations – electrical safety, fire safety, personal watercraft, water patrol, babysitting safety, Serve-Lead-Act-Motivate, bicycle safety, firearm safety, pet safety, fight back, farm safety, the truth about tobacco, choking 911, chemical awareness, distracted driving, drug awareness and the Minnesota State Patrol roll-over simulator.

During their lunch break they saw a demonstration by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office K-9 until.
