Baseball results: Arrows come up short, Chargers win, Silverstreaks split

The Ashby baseball team saw a seventh inning rally come up short in a 4-3 loss at Hancock last Thursday night.

The Arrows’ Blake Ohren and Dylan Barry walked with two outs to put the tying run in scoring position. Jon Quernemoen came to the plate and lined a ball right at the shortstop for the final out of the game.

“If the ball had been two inches higher, it would have been a game-tying hit,” assistant coach Blaine Barry said. “But luck just wasn’t on our side today.”

The Arrows and Owls were tied at one apiece in the top of the third when an error allowed three unearned runs to score for Hancock. Ashby got single runs back in the fourth and sixth innings, but couldn’t get the tying run across the plate.

Riley Mickelson gave his team a strong performance in the loss. The senior allowed just three hits and two walks, while striking out seven.

“Riley was in control throughout the game and kept the Owls guessing at the plate,” Barry said.

Ashby outhit Hancock seven to three on the night. Tanner Langlie and Morgan Wing each had two, while Allard LaRue, Dylan Barry and Quernemoen added one apiece.

“The guys keep improving with each game,” Barry said. “With some work, they will see positive results as the season progresses.”

Ashby fell to 1-8 with the loss, while the Owls moved to 4-6 overall.

B-E 3, ORTONVILLE 2

Brandon-Evansville felt it was playing a lot better baseball than it was a few weeks ago coming into a rematch against 13th-ranked Ortonville last Thursday night.

After a 3-2 win over the Trojans in 13 innings, there isn’t much question about that any longer. The Chargers won their third straight game after an errant throw to third allowed Billie Juul to score the go-ahead run in the top of the 13th inning.

Ortonville couldn’t convert after putting runners on second and third in the bottom of the inning. Tom Bosek relieved Juul after a leadoff walk and struck out the first man he faced. He allowed a double to the Trojan’s Riley Thomson but got out of it with a strikeout and a fly out off the bat of Brandon Nelson.

“Tonight was one of the most memorable high school baseball games I have had the privilege to be a part of,” head coach Brian Perleberg said. “It was a case of two teams going at it for 13 innings like heavyweight fighters.”

Starting pitchers JT Huisman for Brandon-Evansville and Brandon Nelson for Ortonville threw effectively but were long gone by the time this one was decided. Tony Schake came on for the Trojans and struck out 11 batters and allowed just three hits in six innings of work.

“Schake really shut us down in the 7th-12th innings,” Perleberg said. “He simply was untouchable at times.”

Juul was equally as impressive for Brandon-Evansville. The junior relieved Huisman in the fourth and worked the next 8 1/3 innings. He struck out eight before Bosek relieved him in the bottom of the final inning.

“Billie is such a competitor,” Perleberg said. “He really showed true grit tonight. I couldn’t be more pleased with his pitching performance against a good Ortonville lineup.”

Juul got himself the win after a one-out single in the 13th inning. He advanced to third on Bosek’s single before racing home for the winning run of the errant throw.

It was the fourth win in the last five games for the Chargers after starting the season 0-6.

The Osakis baseball team saw a rally come up short in the seventh inning last Friday as the Silverstreaks were forced to settle for a 3-1 week after falling 5-3 against Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.

Osakis trailed 5-2 going into the final frame against the Thunder but loaded the bases with nobody out. Doug Zimmel hit a line drive to center that allowed Lane Berberich to score from third.

Long Prairie recorded a big out on the play though, as Jordan Frederick was thrown out at third trying to tag up. Jordan Mack grounded out in the next at-bat as the Silverstreaks lost to the Thunder for the second time this season.

“We started off well and got some early runs that are important,” head coach Shad Schmidt said. “But we could not get anything going in the middle innings. We had a great comeback attempt fall short. We never gave up or thought we were out of the game, so that’s always good to see from the guys. We just had a couple miscues that hurt us today that were the difference in the game.”

Osakis led 2-0 for a short time after scoring in the top of the first. Drew Fearing had an RBI triple in the inning before Zimmel drove him in with an RBI single.

That lead was short-lived as the Thunder scored two in the bottom of the inning. Long Prairie took the lead in the third before a two-run home run in the fourth gave the Thunder some breathing room.

Jordan Frederick took the loss on the hill after going five innings. He allowed nine hits and four earned runs. He struck out three before Zimmel came on and worked a scoreless sixth inning.

The Silverstreaks were scheduled for four more games this week. They were at West Central Area on Monday and home against Kimball on Tuesday. Osakis was then set to go to St. John’s Prep tomorrow, Thursday, before heading to Browerville on Friday.

OSAKIS 8, PP 2

The Osakis baseball team won its third straight game of the week last Thursday in an 8-2 victory over Parkers Prairie under the lights in Carlos.

The Silverstreaks used a five-run fourth inning to break open a close game. Doug Zimmel and Mitch Herzog got the big hits of the inning as both delivered two-run singles.

“Fun game to be a part of,” head coach Shad Schmidt said. “Being in Carlos under the lights with a big crowd on hand and good team effort made for a great atmosphere. Each guy got to play and got an at-bat. Solid defense, timely hitting and good pitching was what got us the win tonight.”

Herzog started and got the win in five innings of work. His only blemish came in the second inning when the Panthers got a two-out base hit to drive in both their runs. He finished by allowing five hits and just one walk before Hunter Scherr tossed two scoreless innings to close things out.

Zimmel led the offense with two hits, including a double, to go along with three RBIs and two runs scored. Drew Fearing and Kyle Swenstad both added doubles, while Jordan Frederick had two walks and two runs scored.

“So far this week, the boys have found that consistency we have been looking for,” Schmidt said. “Seems like they are focusing and having fun. This was the type of response I was hoping for after last week. [I’m] just really proud of the guys in how they have played and responded.”
