Card boys' tennis: Rain shortens tennis quad; Alexandria falls to Tech

Weather cut short the Alexandria quadrangular tennis tournament Saturday, but not before the Cardinals took a 4-0 win from Litchfield.

“The Cardinals were able to win the first four matches against Litchfield to call it a completed match,” said head coach Dave Ronning. “Moorhead and Hutchinson did not complete any points, and the rain came and halted play for the day.

Alexandria won two singles and two doubles matches against Litchfield as Brock Wood won 6-1, 6-2 over Josh Prahl at third singles, Will Harding defeated Josh Anderson 6-1, 6-4 at fourth singles, Ryan Johnson and Brendan Holm defeated Jon Rothstein and Ethan Stubson 6-1, 6-4 at second doubles, and Mark Kallevig and Levi Duwenhoegger defeated Derek Celader and Cory Pritchett 4-6, 6-2 (8-6) at third doubles.

“It was a disappointing day as the Cardinals were looking forward to playing sub-section foe Moorhead,” said Ronning.

The Cardinals improved their record to 6-8 on the season.

It was tough going for the Cardinal boys’ tennis team as Alexandria fell to St. Cloud Tech 5-2 in Central Lakes Conference action.

“The Tigers showed why they are No. 1 in the conference by winning three of the four singles matches and two of the three doubles matches,” said head coach Dave Ronning.

“Brock Wood got a hard-fought win at third singles by dropping the opening set and then coming back to win the next two. Brock got into a flow and settled in as the match went along. He figured out his opponent’s strengths and weaknesses, and used the information to his advantage in winning two sets.”

The other win for Alexandria came at first doubles as Austin Storm and Mack Wadi needed three sets and a tiebreaker to win.

“Austin and Mack got their second win at first doubles in as many matches,” said the coach. “They also had to go three sets and the third set went all the way to a tiebreaker, where Austin and Mack used some good net play to overcome their foes.”

The Cardinals had some hard-fought matches that didn’t go their way.

“Ben VonBargen played a good match at second singles and was in the match all the way, but couldn’t get key points when needed,” said Ronning. “Trevor [Grandgenett] and Ryan [Johnson] had a tough time getting anything going in their matches and were defeated in straight sets.

“I felt our guys played hard at most every spot, and I feel we have improved overall.”
