Girls' softball: Ashby falls 10-3, Minnewaska wins three, West Central Area drops pair

The Ashby softball team couldn’t overcome a big inning by Wheaton as the Warriors outlasted the Arrows 10-3 on Monday night.

Wheaton scored seven of their 10 runs in the fifth inning. That helped the Warriors put Ashby away in a game that was close through much of the night.

Amber Sundal took the loss in five innings of work. She allowed 11 hits before Paige Nelson came on and worked a scoreless sixth and seventh inning.

“Both girls continue to gain valuable pitching experience,” head coach Kandace Norby said. “It has been great to see them grow in each game they play.”

Sundal also went 3-for-4 from the plate. Emily Elliott added two hits, including a double, and Madison VanSanten finished with a hit and an RBI.

“On a positive note, the girls played solid defense every inning except for one inning that got away from us,” Norby said. “The Warriors’ pitcher, Sarah Lachowitzer, pitched a solid game, and they hit the ball well. I’m very proud of this young team for not giving up and continuing to give 110 percent every game they play.”

Minnewaska wins three

A solo home run in the top of the sixth inning by Julie Helander helped Minnewaska stave off Benson-Hancock in softball action Monday night as the Lakers picked up a 4-1 victory.

Mady Phillips was valuable on offense and defense as she pitched her way to a win, despite giving up 10 hits to the Brave Owls. She also had one hit, but scored three times for Minnewaska, including stealing home in the sixth. In all, she had six stolen bases on the night.

LAKERS WIN

DOUBLEHEADER

Lexi Amundson’s home run in the first capped off a seven-run inning as Minnewaska cruised to an 18-4 win over Breckenridge in the first game of its doubleheader with the Cowgirls.

The Lakers added a nine-run fourth, then iced the win with two runs in the next inning to shorten the game to just five frames.

Kaylyn Oberg, Julie Helander, Mady Phillips, Allyssa Engfer and Amundson each had two hits in the game and Minnewaska capitalized on the eight walks given up by Breckenridge pitcher Allie Pauley, stealing 17 bases along the way.

Phillips got the win in relief of Kaylee Jacobs, who went the first one and a third innings.

The Lakers went on to win the nightcap 12-2 behind the five-inning pitching performance by Phillips, who allowed just three hits.

Jacobs smacked a two-run homer in the first, and Minnewaska’s six-run fifth inning put the game out of reach as Amundson again had a pair of hits, pounded her second home run of the day to open that inning.

Minnewaska had 13 stolen bases in game two and took advantage of 10 walks by Breckenridge’s Clark.

WCA drops pair

Browerville’s Abby Aksamit tossed a no-hitter and struck out nine along the way in a 15-2 win over West Central Area on Monday night.

Both runs by the Knights got on base by working out a walk. One came around to score on an error, while West Central Area got its second run on a passed ball. The Knights couldn’t get much of anything else going as they fell to 0-9 on the season.

“Abby is one of the reasons the Tigers are drawing attention,” WCA head coach Bryan Poyzer said. “The Knights were no real threat against Aksamit, who has led the Tigers to the top of the Prairie Conference this week.”

SWANVILLE 5, WCA 3

The West Central Area softball team was within striking distance of its first win of the season on Tuesday before its game against Swanville was called after five innings with the Bulldogs winning 5-3.

Rain kept the Knights from trying to mount a comeback after staying close in the early innings. Freshman Doranna Blascyk got WCA on the board with an RBI single in the third. Fellow freshmen Megan Holl and Hailey Stark also had RBI singles on the night.

Abby Shultz delivered what turned out to be the game winner for Swanville in the bottom of the fifth. That gave Lexi Loven a win for the Bulldogs and saddled Blascyk with a loss that dropped WCA to 0-9 on the season.
