Osakis baseball: Silverstreaks sink Royalton, fall to Sauk Centre

FREDERICK FILE

Jordan Frederick was named the Prairie Conference athlete of the week in baseball after he went 2-1 in three games pitched, finishing the three conference outings with 21 innings pitched, giving up 22 hits, six runs, four earned runs, while striking out 16 and walking five for a 1.33 ERA.

A 6-4-3 double play with one out and a runner on highlighted the defensive effort put forth by Osakis in its 4-0 shutout of Royalton Tuesday in Prairie Conference baseball.

“[Drew] Fearing dove for a ground ball up the middle behind second base,” said head coach Shad Schmidt. “He came up with the ball and flipped it with his glove to [Lane] Berberich, who made a nice turn to first for the double play.”

Schmidt was extremely happy with his team’s performance, which improved his squad’s record in the Prairie Conference to 5-3.

“Probably our best game to date,” he said. “It was a complete game [that] we’ve been looking for.

“Defense was great with no errors, pitching only allowed four hits and only allowed a base-runner to reach second twice.

“We got 11 hits today, just never got the big, timely hit to break the game open,” Schmidt added. “A good team effort; that’s what we need to get on a consistent basis in the second half of the season.”

The Silverstreaks struck early in this game, scoring twice in the opening inning as Jordan Frederick walked with one out, then advanced on a hit by Fearing. The two then executed a double steal that was followed by a double off the bat of Doug Zimmel to score both runners.

A leadoff hit in the third by Zimmel put him on base, where Austin Rollag took his spot to pinch run. Rollag stole second, then came home on a hit by Mitch Herzog.

The final run of the game scored in the sixth as Kyle Swenstad drove Rollag home after Rollag reached on an infield hit before stealing second.

The Silverstreaks had runners in scoring position during five of the six innings at bat.

The Streaks will now be at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle today, Friday, at 5 p.m.

Sauk Centre 8, Osakis 1

The Silverstreaks wrapped up their week with an 0-3 record after dropping an 8-1 game against Sauk Centre last Friday.

Osakis saw its record drop to .500 after the loss at 4-4 overall. Sauk Centre took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on the back of three hits, two walks and an Osakis error. The Mainstreeters would never relinquish that lead as they added on over the late innings.

“We are lacking consistency right now and focus,” head coach Shad Schmidt said. “Not a good way to back up a 3-0 week with an 0-3 week. The good news is we have a four-game week, and we get a new opportunity to play and get better and pick up some wins, hopefully.”

Hunter Scherr got the start and took the loss on the mound. He threw the first four innings, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks. Lane Berberich and Drew Fearing combined to allow four runs, two earned, over the final two innings.

Doug Zimmel led the Osakis offense with two hits. He had the team’s only RBI with a run-scoring single in the sixth that brought in Berberich. Fearing and Berberich had the only other hits of the game for Osakis.

“We’re not going to let this week affect the rest of the season,” Schmidt said. “We are going to go out and play better and be better this week.”
