The Alexandria girls’ golf team shots its best round of the season on Monday to earn a win in a conference meet at Sauk Rapids.

The Cardinals put all four scorers under 90 for the first time this season on their way to a team score of 332. That was 11 shots lower than second-place finisher St. Cloud Apollo. St. Cloud Tech rounded out the top three with a 348.

“I was very pleased with this team score as it is one of our best the past few years,” head coach Tim Zupfer said. “What may have been the most exciting was that our players were a little upset with their scores. After winning by a comfortable margin, our players knew we left some shots on the course and could have scored even better.”

Natalie Amundson continued her rise this season by carding five birdies on her way to a team-low 77. That tied her for medalist honors with Brainerd’s Jenny Muesing. Amundson shot 38 on the front before finishing her round with a 39 on the back.

Amanda Bigger and Brynn Novotny finished in the top 10 to help the Cardinals secure the win. Bigger finished sixth, shooting a 40 on the front and 43 on the back for an 83. Novotny was seventh with an 84, while Emily Thul rounded out the top four scorers for Alexandria with an 88.

“The players are always going to make some mistakes and miss some putts that they expect to make” Zupfer said. “I was quite pleased, as I felt like we showed improvement in the areas of course management, and the way we handled ourselves after some of our mistakes.”
