Letter - Franson shortsighted about Earth Day
Earth Day was April 22 this year, and I still remember the first Earth Day that I was involved with. The year was 1971.
To the editor:
Earth Day was April 22 this year, and I still remember the first Earth Day that I was involved with. The year was 1971, I was a 22-year-old, returning adult student at Lakewood State Junior College. I remember sitting on the grass outdoors on a fine spring day, listening to speakers talk about Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, and extolling the virtues of an informed and active group of citizen activists for a brighter future. I was enthralled and the things I heard that day have had a lasting impact on me.
So, imagine my surprise when I saw the article regarding Rep. Mary Franson’s remarks on a recent “opening prayer” at the Minnesota House of Representatives. The “tweet” that has me atwitter: “Absolutely infuriates me – celebration of a Pagan holiday, worship of Nature and not God’s Nature.”
Really, Rep. Franson? Apparently, Franson was responding to a tweet by Sheila Kihne, an Eden Prairie blogger, who tweeted, Indoctrination: Earth Day is coming up. Check out these lesson plans & teaching resources!
So, here are two conservative women who from my point of view seem to be a bit shortsighted. I believe that honest folks can have differing opinions, but hey, what’s not to like about trying to keep planet Earth around for future generations?
