To the editor:

April 22 was Earth Day. In recognition of the considerable challenges we face in regard to the climate, I hope your readers will take a moment to support the citizens who devote a considerable amount of time and resources to create a more sustainable climate.

I particularly value the Citizens Climate Lobby, which was formed to create the political will for a sustainable climate. I and hundreds of citizens from throughout the United States and Canada are committed to getting our nations on a more solid course in our use of energy. Thousands of tons of CO2 are released daily by our vehicles, factories, buildings and utilities. This gas enters the atmosphere, warming it and changing our climate and weather.

Scientists at the International Energy Agency (28 nations, including the U.S. and Canada) say that we don’t have much time to turn this around. In March they urged action within five years in order to avoid an irreversible tipping point. People should heed these warnings and support those elected officials brave enough to stand against the special interests who currently exert too much control over the Congress and the media.

Dr. James Hanson, NASA scientist renowned for his historic testimony before Congress in 1989, has said, “Most impressive is the work of the Citizens Climate Lobby … If you want to join the fight to save the planet, to save creation for your grandchildren, there is no more effective step you could take than becoming an active member of this group.”

This year for Earth Day why not heed Dr. Hanson. Go to www.citizensclimatelobby.com and find out how you, too, can become a steward of the planet. Locally, the 7th Congressional District Citizens Climate Lobby, based in Alexandria, can help you get active. E-mail jjclimatelobby@gmail.com.
