After a very mild winter, the 2012 racing season is ready to swing into action at Viking Speedway in Alexandria. In 2012, the "high flyin' half mile," located at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, will host several special events, along with their weekly Saturday night race program.
The track will feature WISSOTA Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and Street Stocks on their weekly lineup. The speedway board has also added class sponsors to all classes that compete at the speedway.
The season will kick off with the first Central Minnesota Icebreaker, presented by FYE Motorsports, April 26-28. This highly anticipated show will feature some of the top talent in each of the WISSOTA classes.
The following weekend, Viking will hold its season opener on Saturday, May 5. As it has been in past seasons, it will be dedicated to longtime track employee and supporter Florian Sprinzel.
The month of May is a busy one for the speedway with a regular race program on May 12. The following Saturday night, May 19, the NOSA Sprint Cars will make their first of two appearances at the speedway.
"The fans wanted more Sprint Car shows, and the NOSA guys enjoy coming down this way to race on the big track," said speedway board member Bill Bevill.
Another touring series will close the month of May as the NLRA Late Models come to town for the annual Memorial Day doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday, May 26-27.
After two regular Saturday night shows, Viking will hold its annual Florian Sprinzel WISSOTA Street Stock special on Saturday, June 16. June 30 will mark the midseason championship and will lead into a huge weekend of racing over July 6-8, when FYE Motorsports presents the 8th annual Minnesota Modified Nationals. This event has become one of the premier events in WISSOTA Modified racing, with drivers coming from all over the upper Midwest to compete. Last year's champion, Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, will look to become the first two-time winner.
The following weekend, July 14, one driver in each of the WISSOTA divisions will earn the right to represent Viking Speedway in the Race of Champions held at the WISSOTA 100 in Huron, SD in September. The AMSOIL_ROC_qualifier will lock in the five feature winners from the night into the field at Huron.
The next special event on the schedule comes on Saturday, August 11 as the speedway will add a handful of members to its hall of fame. This night has special meaning to all parties involved and is complete with an enshrining ceremony during intermission. The speedway will be back in action the following weekend as the fairgrounds play host to the 2012 Douglas County Fair. Thursday and Friday, August 16-17, will feature two nights of demolition derby action, followed by WISSOTA racing on Saturday and a truck and tractor pull on Sunday night.
The NOSA Sprint Cars will make their second appearance of the season at the half mile on Saturday, August 25 and will be joined by the Vintage cars for the evening. The following weekend the regular race season will wrap up with another NLRA Late Model special as we celebrate the Labor Day holiday.
