Card girls' track and field: Alexandria has five first place finishes at Sartell

The Cardinals dominated the distance events

Up against the best that the Central Lakes Conference has to offer, the Cardinal girls came away with five first place finishes to earn a fourth place team finish at Sartell Friday.

“The Lady Cards were able to put together a very strong team performance on what was a great afternoon for track and field,” said head coach Mike Empting. “Individually, the Cards continue to dominate the distance events, earning five places in the top five in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs.

“Jamie Piepenburg was first in the 800-meter with a personal best time of 2:18.94 and Julia Sieling placed third in 2:29.71.

“Bethany Hasz and Karly Betterman placed first and third respectively in the 1,600-meter, both posting personal best times,” he added. “Bethany ran a 5:17.45 in winning the event and Karly ran 5:41.50.

“Megan Hasz dropped [more than] 10 seconds from her personal best in winning the 3,200-meter, posting a time of 11:32.34.”

The Cardinals also got a first place finish from Brittany Ludwig in the discus as she threw 111’3” and the Redbird 4x400 relay team of Sieling, Melissa Drown, B. Hasz and Piepenburg finished first in 4:19.50.

“Brianna Johnson and Brittany Ludwig placed in the top five in both the shot and discus,” said Empting. Brianna placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 97’6” and placed third in the shot put with a put of 32’ 9.5”. Brittany [also] placed second in the shot put with a put of 33’2.5”.

“Murphy Notch had a personal best throw of 29’4” in the shot put,” he added.

Madelyn Urman added a second place in the 100-meter with a 12.94 for a personal best, then placed third in the 200-meter.

Gabby Koel also recorded a personal best as she ran to fifth in the 200-meter.

Karly Betterman earned a second place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a 49.41.

“The 4x100 relay team of Britni DelCastillo, Gabby Koel, Briquelle Bowden, and Madi Urman placed fourth, despite dropping the baton, running a time of 55.07,” said Empting.

The Cardinals will be in Monticello on Thursday for an invite, with field events set to begin at 3 p.m. and track events to begin at 3:15 p.m.
