The Lake Miltona Wednesday Evening Ladies League will hold a fun night of golf for all ladies interested in learning about the league on Wednesday, April 25, 5:15 p.m. at the Lake Miltona Golf Club.

The Atikwa Ladies golf league will hold a wine and cheese sign-up day on Wednesday, April 25, at 4 p.m. at the Atikwa Golf Club at the Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center.

Anyone interested in learning more about the ladies league, which plays on Tuesdays, is invited to attend.

Golf Academy

Scott Dirck’s Golf Academy at the Geneva Golf Club will be holding two junior golf sessions on Thursday June 21 from 9-11 a.m. for ages 3-9 and Friday, June 22 from 9-11 a.m. for ages 10-13.

Several stations for teaching etiquette, long game, short game and putting in a safe and fun environment.

Each session will run for six consecutive weeks.

The Pine Ridge Golf Club will hold its organizational meeting for the men’s league on Tuesday, May 1, at 7 p.m. in the clubhouse.

The Tipsinah Mounds Golf Club in Elbow Lake will hold its Early Bird 4-Man Scramble on Saturday, May 12.

AGC junior golf academy

The Alexandria Golf Club’s Junior Golf Academy will start June 14 and run through August 24.

Lisa Grimes, AGC’s director of instruction, will work with kids ages 5-10 on Thursday mornings and ages 11-15 on Friday mornings. The program is open to all kids in the area.

Kyle’s Lakes Area Classic

The 23rd annual Kyle’s Lakes Area Classic men’s golf tournament is set for Saturday, May 19 at the Alexandria Golf Club.

Registration begins at noon with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. There is a maximum of 128 spots available.

Registration includes 18 holes of golf, cart, brats on the course and a buffet dinner following play.

Early registration date is May 12, with the cost of entry increasing after that date.

Annual United Way Golf Classic

The 12th annual United Way Golf Classic will be Monday, June 11 at the Geneva Golf Club.

Proceeds from the classic support United Way programs in Douglas and Pope counties.

Several events are planned for the course, along with raffle prizes and a registration prize.

Register by May 11 to be entered twice for the registration prize.

Awake the Grapes runs

The Alexandria Figure Skating Club and the Alexandria Kiwanis will host the second annual Awake the Grapes 10K, 5K and 1-mile fun run at the Carlos Creek Winery in Alexandria on May 27 at 10 a.m.

Proceeds from the runs will benefit the Alexandria Figure Skating club.

Running of the Red Bulls

A fun run (walk/stroll) to support the Alpha Company 1-194 AR (CAB) “Red Bulls” will be held Saturday, May 5 at 9 a.m. at the Alexandria YMCA.

All ages are invited to run, walk or stroll a 2.25 mile route to show support for the soldiers.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors to the YMCA track.

There will also be an obstacle course for children from preschool through 8th grade.

Registration is open until May 4.

Lakes Area Endurance half marathon, 5K

The Alexandria Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Lakes Community Church and the Alexandria YMCA will host the annual Lakes Area Endurance half marathon, family fun run and 5K on May 11-12.

All proceeds from the event help send Alexandria students to FCA summer camps.

Minnewaska Warm-Up run

The 7th annual Ron Erno Memorial Lake Minnewaska Warm-Up run will be Saturday, May 5 and will include three races: half marathon, 10k and the Sarah Hoidahl 5k.

The half marathon will begin at 8 a.m. from the Starbuck Community Center and the 10k and 5k will begin at 8:15 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

Hintermeister signs with Concordia College

Brandon-Evansville senior football player Levi Hintermeister has committed to play football at Concordia College in Moorhead.

Hintermeister was selected to the 9-Man All-State football team this past season and was one of the best players in Charger football history. He holds the Minnesota State High School League record for his 107-yard interception return during his freshman season.

Bartholomew honored at UWGB swim banquet

Former Jefferson High School swimmer Amber Bartholomew received the most valuable swimmer award at the annual University of Wisconsin-Green Bay banquet Saturday, April 21.

Bartholomew, a senior, finished her career as the top individual medley swimmer in the history of UW-GB athletics.

She holds the school record in the 200 IM (2:01.28) and the 400 IM (4:18.62), and also holds the conference and league record in the 400 IM.

Bartholomew also recorded NCAA B-Cut times in the 200 and 400 IM. She was first team All-Horizon League three times and received four varsity letters during her swim career.

Bartholomew will graduate in December with a double major in human development and psychology.

Minnewaska Taste on the Lake fundraiser

The fifth annual Taste on the Lake, a wine and microbrew tasting, a Minnewaska Laker Foundation fundraiser will be Wednesday, May 2 at the Lakeside Ballroom in Glenwood, beginning at 6:30 p.m. with open tasting and appetizers, along with a silent auction.

There will be a live auction at 8:30 p.m. that will include a trip for two to the California wine valleys, sponsored by AgCode of Glenwood.

In addition, the live auction will feature four Twins Legends Club tickets.

Tickets are available from board members, at the Glenwood Pizza Ranch and at the door for $20.

All proceeds from this fundraiser are used to support activities and keep activity fees for the Minnewaska Laker activities affordable.

Vangsness athlete of the week

St. John’s University sophomore Casey Vangsness of Alexandria was named the Midwest Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) men’s golf co-athlete of the week on Tuesday, April 17.

The honor, which was shared with Concordia-Moorhead’s Pat Deitz, is the fourth of Vangsness’ career and first this season.

Vangsness started the spring season with a 4-under-par 68 in the 287-289 dual win over St. Cloud State on April 2 and carded a 3-over-par 75 to help the Johnnies shoot a 299 and edge Concordia and Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a triangular April 6.

He is currently tied with junior Dennis Granath (Bandhagen, Sweden/Farsta Gymnasium) with a team-leading 75.1 stroke average in 15 rounds this season.

CLC performer of the week

Cardinal senior Jamie Piepenburg was named the Central Lakes Conference performer of the week in girls’ track and field after winning the 3,200-meter run at Moorhead in 10:41.28, setting a new school and meet record.

Diekman aids Huskies

Alexandria’s Gordy Diekman, a junior at St. Cloud State University, finished eighth overall as his Huskies golf team earned runner-up honors at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) men’s golf championship.

Diekman shot 74-77-76-75 for a 302 tournament total.

Galstad earns win for Dragons

Alexandria’s Jenna Galstad and her partner Kathryn Neubauer picked up a win at second doubles for the Minnesota State University-Moorhead Dragon women’s tennis team.

Galstad’s win was one of four victories on the day for the Dragons, who split two matches recently.

Stier third for Dragons

Alexandria’s Mallory Stier finished third in the hammer throw for the MSU-Moorhead Dragons women’s track and field team at the Bison Invitational.

West Central Area’s Derek Bredy won a pair of events, finishing first in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.

Knight girls receive honor

West Central Area’s Abby VanKempen and Taylin Schleicher were named the recipients of the 2011-2012 Marcia Phillips basketball scholarship award.

The award is given in memory of Marcia Phillips, a 1972 graduate of Elbow Lake-Wendell High School who was a point guard on the 1972 district championship girls’ basketball team.

The scholarship is to allow two outstanding junior basketball players a chance to attend basketball camp.

Hole-in-one

Rich Nodland of Alexandria had a hole-in-one at the PGA West Palmer Course in LaQuinta, CA on April 16. He used a 9-iron on the 145-yard third hole.

Ashby summer volleyball league

There will be a summer volleyball league at the Ashby High School for six-person women’s teams Tuesday evenings from June 12 through July 31.

The league is for volleyball players who have completed 8th grade or competed at a level higher than junior high.

There is an unlimited number of players allowed on each team, but a minimum of five must be on the court per game.

YMCA Healthy Kids Day

The Alexandria Area YMCA will celebrate Healthy Kids Day with a free community event for kids and families in the greater Alexandria area today, Friday.

Healthy Kids Day, a national initiative of the Y to improve the health and well-being of kids, is filled with fun, active play and educational activities that will help parents improve their kids’ lifestyles for the long term.

The Alexandria Area YMCA’s event will take place from 6-8 p.m. and will feature activities such as physical activity stations, informational booths will feature community health care providers and swimming.

Card boys’ basketball camp

The Alexandria boys’ basketball program, along with Lakes Area Recreation, will hold its Cardinal boys’ camp June 18-21.

Camp directors include Cardinal head basketball coach Forrest Witt, assistant coaches Josh Dale and Tom Miller, along with former and current varsity players.

The camp focuses on fundamentals and skill development, along with offense, defense and transition play. Players will also work on goal setting, teamwork, reaching potential, mental toughness and confidence.

The camp is open to players in kindergarten through 7th grade, and will be divided into four age groups.

Alexandria boys’ basketball youth league

The Alexandria boys’ basketball program will hold a youth league to help provide players with the chance to learn and develop.

Led by Cardinal head coach Forrest Witt, the program is for players in 4th-7th grade on Mondays and Wednesdays from June 25 through July 18.

The YMCA offers batting cages for rent.

Times available for baseball hitting are Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 7-9 p.m., while softball batting practice is Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 6-7 p.m.

Star of the North registration open

Team sports registration is now open for the 25th annual Star of the North games in Rochester on June 15-24.

The Star of the North games is Minnesota’s annual Olympic-style amateur sports festival with more than 4,500 athletes from all over the state competing in 17 different sports.

21st Greg Schwartz wrestling camp

The 21st Greg Schwartz Memorial wrestling camp is set for June 18-21 at the Morris Area High School auxiliary gym.

The camp features many collegiate wrestlers and coaches as clinicians.
