Card boys' golf: Alexandria second in its own invitational

Freshman Lukas Bigger leads the team with a fourth place

The top Alexandria boys’ golf team used a fourth-place finish by freshman Lukas Bigger and finished in second place as it hosted its home invite at the Alexandria Golf Club last Thursday.

Bigger rebounded from a 93 at Oak Hill earlier in the week to shoot a 78 on his home course. That helped his team to a 329, nine shots off section favorite Moorhead, which finished first in its opening meet of the season.

The Spuds used top-two finishes by Bryant Buckellew and Ben Welle. They carded a 71 and 72, respectively, to pace their team to the first-place finish.

Tanner Gustafson was Alexandria’s second leading scorer. He finished with an 81, while Austin McCulloch, John Vogeler and Cole Haugen all finished with 85s to round out the Cardinals’ scorers. Alexandria improved its score by seven strokes from the trip to Oak Hill earlier in the week.

“It was a better showing for Alex in our own invite,” head coach Rick Larson said. “The weather conditions were OK, but the scoring for all teams was a little high, but it’s still early in our season.”

Alexandria’s second team finished 10th out of the 13 teams in the field. Kevin Finley led that group with an 86. Dan Hennessy followed with an 87 and Nic Hanson and Aaron Johnson finished off the top four scorers with 88s.

“These players all learned a lot by competing in this meet Larson said.
