Letter - Overcoming challenges of autism

April, Autism Awareness Month, will soon be over. But families of children and adults on the autism spectrum will continue to care and advocate for their loved ones. Every day their awareness increases as they meet and overcome challenges along the way.

To the editor:

April, Autism Awareness Month, will soon be over. But families of children and adults on the autism spectrum will continue to care and advocate for their loved ones. Every day their awareness increases as they meet and overcome challenges along the way.

On April 13, KSTP’s nightly news aired a story about Me Moves. Bloomington schools are using it for students with autism and ADHD. Teachers have discovered it helps students calm down and focus, so their learning improves.

Some funds raised at our local autism awareness walk held in 2010 were used to obtain items to assist children with sensory issues. Because some families have used it successfully at home, Me Moves is now available at Douglas County Library. The kit includes a DVD, a CD, textured puzzle cards and a user guide. It can be checked out locally or in neighboring communities through the Viking Library System.

On April 21, an autism awareness walk is being held in Fergus Falls. Many from Otter Tail County joined us in 2010 so we are traveling to Fergus on Saturday to support their local efforts. More information is available at www.autismcareteam.org. We’d love to see you there too!
