Maurine was born April 15, 1924 at home in Victor, South Dakota to Otto and Edith (Youngberg) Hovren. She was baptized on May 25, 1924 by the Rev. Ernest Martell of Faith Lutheran Church. Maurine started first grade in Victor. At the age of 6, the family moved to Kensington, where she grew up. She was confirmed on January 19, 1938 by the Rev. B.G. Holmes at First Lutheran Church in Kensington. Maurine graduated in 1942 from Kensington High School.

During high school Maurine spent her summers at her grandparents’ farm near New Effington, SD helping with the household chores. They would work long hours all week and on Saturday nights her aunts and uncles would take her to dances with them. Sunday morning was church and a chicken dinner always followed.

Maurine attended Concordia College in Moorhead where she was a business major in 1942 and 1943. She worked in Fargo, ND for the Great West Life Assurance Company in the bookkeeping department for 1-1/2 years. Maurine and her cousin, Elna Hoglund, moved to Tacoma, WA where she was employed at the home office of United Pacific Insurance Company. When her children were in grade school she started working in Dr. Bert Kolp’s office. She enjoyed her job and all of the wonderful people she met.

Aloys Gerald Fjoslien and Maurine were united in marriage on June 1, 1946 at Grace Lutheran Church in Richmond, CA by the Rev. Miles W. Bonker. Maurine was employed at a car agency office. Sandra Kay was born on August 13, 1948 in Oakland, CA. Thanksgiving week of 1948 they arrived in Glenwood on vacation with the first grandchild. Otto Hovren (Maurine’s father) offered Al a job at Glenwood Implement. Maurine stayed in Glenwood with Sandy and Al went to California to move their belongings to Glenwood. Gary Alan was born on September 16, 1950.

Maurine was an active member of the USO during WW II in Tacoma, WA. Glenwood Lutheran Church has been her church home for 62 years and where she frequently volunteered. She belonged to the Dorcas Society, WELCA, and circle. Maurine volunteered for two terms on the board of Glenwood Retirement Village, representing the Glenwood Lutheran Church Women.

Playing cards and socializing with friends were favorite activities. She was a member of the Legion and VFW Axillaries, Dance Club, Historical Society, and a member of the Minnewaska Golf Club. Maurine, with her dear friends Carol Dero and Vi Miller, nicknamed The Three Musketeers, enjoyed volunteering and attending functions at Glenwood Central Square. They were honored as Patrons of the Arts.

Maurine is survived by her children, Sandy (Jim) Nelson and Gary Fjoslien of Glenwood; grandchildren, Greg (Michelle) Nelson of Brownwood, TX, Kate (Kevin) Kramer of Cologne, MN, and Doug Nelson of Mankato; great-grandchildren, Caleb and Tyler Nelson, and Cale and Morgan Kramer; brother, Warren Hovren of Glenwood and sister, Lois (John) Blumer of St. Paul; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Edith; her husband, Al; granddaughter, Jillian Nelson; sister-in-law, Dorothy Hovren; and nephew, James Blumer.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 23 at 11 a.m. at Glenwood Lutheran Church in Glenwood with the Rev. Krista Lee officiating. Visitation is Sunday, April 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be at Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery.
