Area softball: Arrows pick up first win, Chargers, Lakers, Silverstreaks also victorious

Ashby picked up its first conference win of the softball season Tuesday afternoon, defeating Ortonville 18-4.

The Trojan pitcher handed out 21 walks to the Arrows, who also had 10 hits and seven stolen bases.

“It was great to get our first conference win of the season,” said head coach Kandace Norby. “The girls had timely hitting and rock solid defense. I’m proud of the determination and focus of this team.”

Meg Roley led the offensive outpouring by Ashby as she blasted a solo homer in the first inning, while Amber Sundal went 2-for-4 with a triple and Abbi Ras was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in.

Paige Nelson earned the win on the mound as she allowed just two hits and struck out four in the 5-inning appearance.

After trailing 3-0 and 4-3, the Brandon-Evansville girls put together two big innings that proved to be just enough to pick up their third straight win of the season, defeating Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley 7-5.

“We started out rough in the field but battled through it,” said Charger head coach Tim Pattrin. “Our young girls that made mistakes early stayed mentally tough and came through in the end. Very proud of the girls for not giving up and giving themselves a chance to win in the end.”

The Wolverines scored a run the top of the first, then added two more in the top of the third off starter Carlie Steffenson, but the Chargers tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the third.

CGB edged ahead in the fifth with a solo run, but four runs by Brandon-Evansville in the bottom of the inning gave them a lead that would hold, despite a final run in the seventh by the Wolverines.

Steffenson picked up the win as she went the distance, allowing five runs, two earned, on seven hits.

Megan Kokett, Kinsley Randt and Kristine Betterman each had three hits for the Chargers, who are now 3-0.

Waska 15, Melrose 5

Minnewaska needed just six innings to hand Melrose a loss in West Central North Conference softball action Tuesday afternoon, winning 15-5.

The Lakers used a six-run third and a five-run fourth to put the game out of reach.

Brooke Winter, Kaylee Jacobs, Mady Phillips and Alyssa Engfer each had two hits in the game, with Winter and Jacobs driving in two runs apiece.

Jacobs also picked up the pitching win as she went the first four and two-thirds innings.

Osakis 14, Upsala 4

Osakis cruised to an easy 14-4 victory over Upsala to stay perfect on the season and in the Prairie Conference as the Silverstreaks begin their march toward defending their conference championship.

“We started the game very strong,” said Osakis head coach John Stigman of his team’s early 10-0 advantage. “We jumped out to an early big lead. We were very aggressive at the plate and on the bases. We broke the game open early in the first and second innings, then tacked on some insurance.

“About mid-game, the momentum shifted to Upsala, so we had to get back the edge we had at the start. In the bottom of the fifth, we were able to get the momentum back and ended the game.

“Sabrina [Zimmel] had a solid start in the circle for us today and a big day at the plate,” he added. “Rachelle Rajdl also had a breakout game for us.”

Zimmel went the distance, allowing just four runs, three earned, on four hits and four walks, striking out 11. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, triple and a home run to account for seven runs batted in.

Rajdl was 3-for-3 with one RBI, while Alex Anderson went 3-3 and scored three runs.

Rosie Johnson hit a walk-off home run to send the Parkers Prairie softball team home with a 9-8 loss against Ottertail Central on Tuesday night.

Johnson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Bulldogs. Carley VanWatermulen added a double and three RBIs, as well.

The Panthers rallied from a 5-0 deficit with a four-run fifth inning. They added two each over the next two innings, but it wasn’t enough as Parkers Prairie remained winless on the season.

West Central Area dropped to 0-6 on the softball diamond as Long Prairie-Grey Eagle won a run-shortened contest 21-4.

The Knights got the first runs of the game as McKenna Blehr drove in Mikayla Stark, and Ashton Blair’s stolen base allowed Amy Benson to score from third.

But from there, things fell apart as starter Lauryn McLaughlin walked eight in the first inning and allowed 10 hits early.

“It’s still going to be a tough couple of weeks. We are not only young, but now our injuries are adding up,” said Knight head coach Brian Poyzer. “West Central Area has lost three players to season-ending injuries and after today, has two others that are day-to-day.”
