Minnewaska girls' golf: Lakers still going strong

The state tournament team won their first two tournaments to keep its success rolling

Despite the poor weather conditions, sisters Brianna and Jenna Janu tied for medalist honors Monday to lead the Laker girls’ golf team to a first place finish in their season opener at the 19-team Irondale Invitational at TPC Twin Cities.

Minnewaska tied with Stillwater in the team scoring as both squads posted 337, but the Lakers earned the outright win on a tiebreaker as their fifth score was better than the fifth score of the Ponies.

Last year’s Class AA champion Red Wing finished in third place, just four strokes off the lead. Minnewaska was third in the State Class AA meet last year, with Stillwater the runner-up in Class AAA.

LAKERS WIN AT PAYNESVILLE

Minnewaska added another team victory Tuesday afternoon as the Laker girls competed in the West Central North Conference opener at Paynesville, outscoring second place Albany and New London-Spicer by 32 strokes.

Jenna Janu again earned medalist honors as she posted a 39, three strokes ahead of teammates Ashlyn and Alexis Guggisberg, who tied for second place with 42s.
