Brandon-Evansville baseball: Chargers fall
Early inning mistakes cause loss to Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley
Brandon-Evansville pitchers struggled to find the strike zone early and it ended up costing them in a 9-5 loss to Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley last Thursday night.
The Chargers gave up eight runs through the first three innings. They walked seven and hit two more batters during that stretch as the Wolverines took advantage of the free passes to take a lead they would never relinquish.
Brandon-Evansville tried to rally in the middle innings. The Chargers scored two runs in the fourth on RBI hits from Levi Hintermeister and Mitch Anderson. They couldn’t get any more, though, as a bases-loaded threat was thwarted on a double-play to end the inning. Brandon-Evansville left the bases loaded again in the sixth as they dropped to 0-4 on the season.
“The good news about this game is that we never gave up,” head coach Brian Perleberg said. “We fell behind early but kept chipping away at the lead and creeping back into the game. CGB took advantage of our mistakes in the early innings, but we really felt like we had the momentum swing our way after the third inning.”
Starter Craig Campbell took the loss in 2 1/3 innings of work. He allowed four earned runs on three walks and two hits. Blake Satterlie relieved him with one out in the third and went the final 3 2/3 innings.
Billie Juul and Hintermeister led the offense with two hits each. Juul had a double and an RBI, while Hintermeister added a run scored and an RBI. Tom Bosek also went 1-for-1 with two walks and two runs scored.
“When I look back and analyze this game, both teams were very even when you look at the number of hits, errors, stolen bases and walks allowed,” Perleberg said. “The 13 runners that we left on base was the decisive statistic in this game.”
