Card boys' track and field: Hacker, Guetter earn wins for Alexandria

The Cardinal track team finished fifth in an 11-team field.

Cold and rain greeted the Cardinal boys’ track and field team in its first outdoor meet of the season Friday at Moorhead, and saw Alexandria athletes pick up wins in two events.

“At the start of the meet, it was 51 degrees, steady rain with winds of 25 mph,” said head coach Jerry Amundson. “Unfortunately, the weather did not improve for the entire six-hour meet.

“The Cards were able to fight through the conditions and have some good performances in spite of the weather.”

A total of 11 teams competed, with six teams representing Section 8AA and the rest from North Dakota. West Fargo captured the team title, with Moorhead second and Alexandria fifth.

“Jesse Hacker and sophomore Colin Guetter were the lone winners for Alexandria,” said Amundson. “Jesse won his third shot put event of the young season with a toss of 50’11”. Colin won the discus event with a toss of 141’3”.

“For the young thrower, it was a personal best effort by 25’6”,” he added.

Zac Bartolomeo had personal bests in both the 800-meter and 1,600-meter races as he finished second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:32.47 and third in the 800 with a 1:58.94.

“Brandon Beliveau placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 130’6”,” said Amundson. “Brian Krebs had over a 2-foot improvement in the shot to place fifth with a toss of 42’6.5”.”

Alexandria also got fifth and sixth place finishes respectively from Jimmy Lovrien and Will Sieling in the 3,200-meter run with season best times, while Mitch Peck was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles.

“Lee Klein chipped in with a sixth place finish in the 200-meter dash,” said the coach, “and Phil Pham earned sixth place in the long jump.

“The 4x100 relay team also placed sixth in a tight field with a time of 46.74.”

Alexandria got big improvements in performances from Wesley Graves with a 34-second drop in the 1,600-meter run, Ben Tollefson with a 15-second drop in the 1,600, Austin Thom and Trent Piepenburg with drops of 11 and nine seconds respectively in the 3,200-meter run, Brett Ludwig with a 6-foot improvement in the discus, and Cole Jodsaas with a 2.5-second drop in the 400-meter dash.

Alexandria will be at Sartell on Friday for a quadrangular with the three top teams in the Central Lakes Conference indoor. Action starts at 4:15 p.m.
