Card girls' track and field: Alexandria third at Moorhead

Piepenburg, Larson earn individual firsts for the Cardinals

The Cardinal girls put together a third-place performance at the Moorhead Invitational track and field meet Friday, despite the miserable weather, finding their stride in the sprints and distance events, along with the jumps and throws.

“The Cards and Jamie Piepenburg continue to dominate the distance events,” said head coach Mike Empting. “Piepenburg won the 3,200-meter run with a personal best, school record and MAA meet record of 10:41.28, completing her race over one minute in front of her nearest competition. Both the Alexandria and MAA meet record were previously held by Piepenburg.

“Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz placed third and fourth respectively in the 1,600-meter, with Megan posting a personal best time of 5:25.14 in her fourth place showing.”

In the 800-meter run, Julia Sieling placed seventh with a time of 2:33.02, while Kaitlyn Jacobson added a 6.23-second improvement in her performance in that event.

“In the sprints, Madelyn Urman placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.32 into a head wind and rain,” said Empting. “Gabby Koel placed third in the 200-meter with a time of 28.24, again into the wind and rain, and Kate LeBrasseur improved 1.57 in the 400-meter run.”

Alexandria also dominated the high jump, putting three in the top eight spots.

Leading the way was Jenna Larson with first place on a 5’0” jump as she set a new personal best. Gabby Koel was second at 4’10” and Briquelle Bowden was sixth at 4’8”.

Brianna Johnson earned a second place in the discus with a personal best throw of 105’1” and placed fifth in the shot put with a distance of 33’0”.

“[She was] just one inch off her all-time best in that event,” said Empting.

Brittany Ludwig was fourth in the shot put with a distance of 34’3” and sixth in the discus with a throw of 96’10”.

Alexandria will be at the Sartell quadrangular on Friday.
