The Brandon-Evansville baseball team was plagued by an early deficit again on Monday night as the Chargers fell to 0-3 with a 9-1 loss to Ortonville.
The Trojans jumped out 3-1 after the first and expanded that lead to 7-1 after three. The Chargers couldn’t overcome that as they scored their lone run on an RBI from Dan Schaffer in the opening frame.
“For the third straight game, we dug ourselves into an early hole and have not been able to regain any sort of momentum,” head coach Brian Perleberg said. “It seems when our pitchers throw well, the defense seems to struggle and vice versa.”
Dan Schaffer took the ball and lasted four innings. He struck out three but allowed seven earned runs. Freshman Tom Bosek took over in the fifth and allowed two runs before settling down and pitching a scoreless sixth. John Huisman finished things off by striking out one in an inning of relief.
Schaffer led the offense with a 3-for-4 day from the plate. Bosek, Billie Juul and Huisman all added hits, as well.
“Give Ortonville credit for putting the ball in play,” Perleberg said. “And to their pitchers, who never allowed us to string together enough hits to mount a rally.”
