The Osakis baseball team got its season off on the right foot with a four-run first inning that led to a 6-1 win over Royalton on Tuesday night.
Doug Zimmel, Jordan Mack and Joe Roggenbuck all had run-scoring hits in the opening frame to get Osakis going. Kyle Swenstad also had a run-scoring sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 in a game that the Silverstreaks controlled from start to finish.
“This was a good way to start the season for us as a team,” head coach Shad Schmidt said. “A complete team effort all the way around – pitching, offense, defense, just the way it should be. Every starter got on base today, and we played solid, heads up baseball.”
The early run support was more than enough for starter Jordan Frederick. The sophomore hurler got off to a strong start this spring by pitching a complete game for the win. He scattered eight hits and a walk, but got out of any trouble by striking out 10 Royals. He allowed just the one earned run on a fielder’s choice in the fifth inning.
Drew Fearing had a double, two walks and two runs scored to set the table for the offense. Zimmel, Frederick, Mack, Swenstad, Roggenbuck and Lane Berberich all added hits on the day.
“A nice win and start, but that’s all it is is a start,” Schmidt said. “We need that kind of effort and play game in and game out. I am just really proud of how the guys came ready to play from the first pitch on.”
