The Minnewaska softball team is off to a 2-0 start to the season after wins over Paynesville and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in the last week.

The Lakers beat the Bulldogs 7-4 on Tuesday after beating the Jaguars in the opener last Thursday.

Mady Phillips got the win against Paynesville after striking out eight. She scattered five hits, a walk and a hit batsman and held the Bulldogs to just one earned run in seven inning of work.

Her offense gave her room to work with after a couple early runs. The Lakers scored in three out of the first four innings to take a 4-0 lead. Kaylyn Oberg finished the night 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Brook Winter added two hits and two RBIs and Kaylee Jacobs had a hit and two RBIs, as well.

The Lakers needed a couple runs in extra innings to edge the Jaguars in the opener. Minnewaska scored twice in the eighth inning to secure the 8-6 win after Phillips retired BBE in order in the bottom of the frame.

Phillips worked 7 1/3 innings to pick up the win. She allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits. She struck out seven.

Jacobs had a big night from the plate, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, three runs and two RBIs. Jillian Hendrickson and Courtney Schmidt each added two hits apiece.
