Alex boys' golf: Cards open at Minnewaska

The Alexandria boys’ golf team opened up the season in cold and windy conditions on Tuesday evening in a dual at the Minnewaska Golf Club against the Lakers.

The Alexandria boys’ golf team opened up the season in cold and windy conditions on Tuesday evening in a dual at the Minnewaska Golf Club against the Lakers.

The Cardinals brought 12 players to the meet and played just nine holes to get their feet wet in the early season. John Vogeler paced Alexandria with a 39. Dan Hennessey was right behind him with a 40 and Brady Hafdal, Aaron Johnson and Brady Bast all shot 41s.

“It was nice to see a different course and competition against other players,” head coach Rick Larson said. “Of course, in Minnesota they say wait a few minutes and the weather will change. So after practicing in some good, warm weather conditions, our first meet was in cold and windy conditions.”

The Cardinals did their best to battle those conditions. Nine players finished with a 44 or lower. Nic Hanson carded a 44, while Kevin Finley, Lukas Bigger and Cole Haugen all had 43s.

“The players were geared up and responded well with some scoring that pleasantly surprised me,” Larson said. “We took mainly a No. 2 team because Minnewaska’s team was pretty young and inexperienced. Four freshmen and four sophomores saw their first varsity competition. As you can see from the scoring, they responded well.”

The Cardinals will jump into their first Central Lakes Conference meet of the season next. They travel to Sauk Rapids-Rice next Monday.
