The West Central Area girls’ basketball team put the finishing touches on a 15-10 season by handing out its team awards recently.

Jen Froemming was named the team’s Offensive MVP and overall MVP after leading the Knights all season long. She was also one of three WCA players named All-Prairie Conference in the team’s first season in the league. Christina Kruize and Holly VanKempen were also named to the team.

Kruize earned the Hardest Worker Award and shared the Shining Knight Award with Kylee Fernholz. VanKempen was named the team’s most improved player, while Shawna Jenson rounded out the team award winners with the Most Valuable Defensive Player Award. She was also named academic all state by the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association (MGBCA).

“This group of girls pulled together, learned to play as a team and had an excellent season,” head coach Beth Hanson said of her players. “Our constant theme throughout the year was to strive for perfection. Never settle for less than your best effort. That is exactly how the girls finished their season.”

The Knights finished 11-5 in Prairie play and entered the Section 6A tournament as the No. 5 seed in the South. They traveled to Wheaton-Herman-Norcross where they lost 63-61 in overtime.

“They poured their hearts out into that game,” Hanson said. “I am extremely proud of how they competed this year. We will greatly miss our seniors (Froemming, Bekkah Holmes, Jenson, Abby Peterson) and wish them well in the future. The future for the Knights is looking good as well.”
