The Osakis girls’ relay teams have proven to be a force in recent history and nothing seems to have changed through the first few meets this spring.
The Silverstreaks boys’ and girls’ teams both finished in fifth place at the Pierz Invitational, but the girls won three of the relays to highlight the meet for Osakis.
The 4x800 team of Brittney Sadlemyer, Alexa Hoffarth, Makayla Hoglin and Cali Sadlemyer got the girls started with a win in the first event. They finished in 10:32.41, more than 16 seconds ahead of their nearest competition from Pillager.
The 4x200 team of Hoffarth, Abby Stroup, Taylor Kraemer and Becka Sadlemyer followed suit shortly after. They edged Pequot Lakes by almost five seconds with a time of 1:52.47.
Stroup, Cali Sadlemyer, Kraemer and Brittney Sadlemyer then put the finishing touches on things in the 4x400 with a winning time of 4:26.22. The 4x100 team of Hoffarth, Stroup, Kraemer and Becka Sadlemyer missed making it a clean sweep for the relays by just .21 seconds in a narrow loss to Pequot Lakes.
“Even though we were missing some girls, I wanted to put together some competitive relays to see how some different combinations looked,” head coach Lee VanNyhuis said. “These early meets are a good time to do that. The girls responded well and ran some decent times, but I’m still anxious to see us go at full strength.”
It was one of the many positives VanNyhuis said he took from the meet. Devon Nelson paced the boys with a winning performance in the 1,600. He finished in 4:55.39 and set the table for a strong day in the distance events.
“I’m really happy with where our distance runners are at,” VanNyhuis said. “[Assistant] coach [Justin] Dahlheimer has been doing a great job with those kids. They are all ahead of where they were last year at this time.
“Devon looked really good in the 1,600. He ran a smart race. He ran a good split in the 4x400 as well, showing he has the speed to go get people at the end of races.”
The 4x100 relay teams for the boys also came in a close second behind Pequot Lakes. Brian Thorstad, Trey Erie, Hunter Johnson and Seth Newman finished in a time of 48.97, less than two seconds out of first place.
“It was good to see the boys 4x100 relay team come together,” VanNyhuis said. “Brian and Trey are fitting in nicely.”
That helped the boys finish with 26 team points. Pillager won the event with 112.50 points. The Osakis girls had 48.33 points as Pequot Lakes took the meet with 108.33.
