New officers were elected to the Douglas County DFL Board – Charles Nettestad, chair; Bonnie Schnell, vice chair; and John Heydt as outreach officer. Ruth Obert, secretary, and Cal Anderson, treasurer, were re-elected to their respective positions.
Also elected were 14 directors. They include Lowell Anderson, Dennis Barnack, Patty Bracey, Sue Engstrom, Ken Howell, Cliff Knutson, Katy Mohabir, Deb Odland, Shawn Olson, Judy Rose, Dale Sarff, Beth Teeuwen, Jeremy Vinar and Jane Wicklander.
The new board and directors have set a regular meeting date of the first Thursday of each month starting at 7 p.m., beginning in May.
The April meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 12, starting at 5:30 p.m. (open to all). The local DFLers will be celebrating the 68th birthday party of the State of Minnesota DFL that evening (see related story).
The meeting will take place at the Pizza Ranch Restaurant located at 1522 South Broadway, Alexandria. Members are invited to join the fun and listen to the evening speaker, Representative Erin Murphy, who is the assistant minority leader of the Minnesota House.
“As chair of the Douglas County DFL, I encourage you to come out and get to know some of the other DFLers in our area,” said Nettestad.
Shortly after Nettestad was elected chair, a friend asked him why he was getting actively involved in the local DFL.
“I told him that for 25 years I have been encouraging Boy Scouts to have good character and to develop good citizenship habits,” Nettestad said. “When Rush Limbaugh [radio talk show host] verbally attacked the young lady who spoke before Congress, it made me angry. No citizen should have to take that kind of verbal abuse for expressing their opinion. I felt motivated to finally ‘get off the sidelines’ and to get involved. I would encourage people of good will on all sides of the fence – Democrat, Republican and Independent – to get back involved in our political process.”
