Students in Tanya Jensen’s classes at Jefferson High School (JHS) in Alexandria are being given the opportunity to get a glimpse of different careers.
• On March 1 and 2, child development and ECFE careers classes hosted round one of three “Play school at JHS” events.
Sara Peterson, owner of Cross Country Daycare, visited JHS for a play school. Students set up free play developmental stations for the children, provided healthy snacks and offered developmental learning game opportunities.
Students also created lesson plans based on the theme of the day and coordinated crafts and activities. Students used child observation skills and developmental learning form class to notice child development stages of the children involved. They analyzed the effectiveness of the children’s play school experience.
• On March 7, the health occupations careers class took part in a class profession investigation. Renada Bosek form Solutions Behavioral Healthcare of Alexandria visited the class to explain the field of psychology as a profession.
Students were exposed to the options in the psychology field and asked questions about this career. Bosek used song, video and presentation media.
• Twice a week throughout the month of May, the ECFE careers students are learning, interacting and teaching students in childcare settings at the YMCA, Woodland ECFE and Headstart. The students rotate between age groups and between the two hosting facilities, learning about child development, and age- and stage-appropriate activities, abilities and learning styles.
• Twice a week through May health careers students are visiting the following businesses: Dental Health Associates, Grand Arbor, Bethany Homes, Kossan Chiropractic, Northwest Rehabilitation, Trumm Drug Pharmacy, Noonan’s Sports Specialists, CentraCare Radiology, Douglas County Hospital and Dentistry at the Center.
The students will have the opportunity to see the health care fields in action and use those experiences to plan the best health care path for their futures.
