Minnewaska baseball: Lakers enter with inexperience

The Minnewaska baseball team will have to rely on a lot of youth this season after losing a big group to graduation last season.

The Minnewaska baseball team will have to rely on a lot of youth this season after losing a big group to graduation last season.

Seniors Blake Johnsrud, Cody Blevins, Sawyer Steidler-Thompson and Blake Stinkraus all got a taste of the varsity game last year. Now they will be asked to help carry the torch. Fellow senior Nate Anderson is new to the program this season and coaches have liked his work ethic early on in practice.

“With the large senior class we graduated last year, these boys didn’t get a ton of playing time last season,” head coach Brian Gruber said of his seniors. “But they worked hard in practice and have shown great leadership and dedication early this season. They will be counted on to step up and lead this team both on and off the field.”

The Lakers also have a big junior class that will have a chance to impress this spring. Austin Giese, Jake Amundson, Dylan Peterson, Tyler Nielsen, Bryce Mioudus, Matt Anderson, Derek Klimek, Nick Peters, Zach Sanford, Sam Long and Christian Rorvig give this team added depth as it searches for the right combination of players.

“This core group will have a major impact on our success this season,” Gruber said. “They are learning the ropes and expectations of the varsity program and with continued effort in practice, should contribute to our success this season.”

The Lakers will be back in the North side of the West Central Conference this spring. Albany, Paynesville and Melrose are expected to compete for a conference crown. Gruber hopes teams like the Lakers, Sauk Centre and New London-Spicer can make it tough for them throughout the season.

“We believe playing a quality opponent will only improve our level of play,” Gruber said. “The fans will also be treated to some very good baseball as they come out to watch the Lakers compete.”
