The Alexandria girls’ track and field team took second at the CLC Indoor Championships in St. Cloud this past weekend behind another record-setting performance by Jamie Piepenburg.
The rest of the CLC field will be happy to see Piepenburg head to the University of Minnesota next season. That might open up the field a little more for others as the senior continues to dominate the distance events.
This time, she set a CLC Indoor record in the 1,600. Piepenburg’s time of 5:02.03 shattered the previous record of 5:13 coming into the event. She finished more than a minute ahead of her nearest competitor on Saturday.
The Cardinals had three other first-place finishes that helped them finish second overall at the meet. The 4x800 relay team of Karly Betterman, Bethany Hasz, Nicole Canavati and Julia Sieling won in a time of 10:07.61.
Brittany Ludwig and Briquelle Bowden each added individual wins. Ludwig took the shot put with a toss of 34’01.” Bowden won the high jump with a leap of 5’02.” The Cardinals also had three second-place finishes to help add depth.
Sartell finished first at the meet with a team score of 125. Alexandria edged out Brainerd for second with 87 points. The Warriors were right behind with 86 and Willmar rounded out the top four with 72 team points.
Alexandria will now have some practice time before returning after Easter. The Cardinals will travel to Moorhead for the MAA Outdoor on April 13. Events that day are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
