Central Square in Glenwood will present a musical theatrical performance entitled Heroes on Friday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Historic Auditorium.
Heroes, a song written and performed by Ann Reed in 1991, was her response to hearing a call-in radio show and reading several articles arguing that there were no real role models left for children or adults. Remembering her history classes, little was mentioned of women's accomplishments. So she went to work, starting with a long list of women from all over the world with a variety of careers.
She chose 40 women, without regard to nationality, political ideology or religious affiliation but for the place they held in history.
The song struck a universal chord and grew to anthem proportion. Reed then expanded the concept of the song into something larger, enhanced by mixed media. The result was Heroes: A Celebration of Women Who Changed History and Our Lives.
The first performance was produced by Minnesota Public Radio and received critical acclaim.
Central Square’s production of Heroes features Reed and actors, singers and musicians from the Twin Cities: Aimee K. Bryant, Leslie Ball, Dan Chouinard, Joan Griffith, Thomasina Petrus, Denise Tabet and a chorus from Pope County.
