To the editor:
During the week of April 2- 8, Douglas County Public Health will join public health departments across America in celebrating National Public Health Week. This year’s theme is “A Healthier America Begins Today.” It truly does begin today and it begins with each one of us. Nearly 1 million Americans die every year from diseases that could be prevented if we were all willing to make even small changes in our lifestyles.
As health care costs continue to escalate, and knowing that a good share of those costs can be attributed to the treatment of chronic diseases, we can no longer afford to ignore the fact that we are all part of holding down those costs. If we all make very simple changes such as getting out and walking a little more, eating a few more fruits and vegetables, and cutting back on our alcohol and tobacco consumption, we could have a major impact on those health care costs.
Douglas County is fortunate to have a very capable and knowledgeable staff of dedicated nurses, social workers, health educators, sanitarians, dieticians, senior specialists and support staff that work to make our community a healthier one. They work with individuals, families and communities throughout Douglas County to assist and support you in whatever way they can, so that you can take those small steps toward a healthier you and a healthier Douglas County.
Please join me in recognizing and thanking all the staff at Douglas County Public Health for their tremendous efforts and work. There is no better public health team than the one right here in Douglas County. Hats off to them for what they do and hats off to all of you who are doing your part to make this a healthier Douglas County.
