FCA Easter luncheon

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) annual Easter luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, April 5 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Broadway Ballroom.

Gerry Hoelscher will be the guest speaker and the Alexandria Aces will perform.

There will be a freewill offering and everyone is welcome.

Berglin provides power for Crookston

Former Cardinal softball player Samantha Berglin is off to a fast start for the University of Minnesota-Crookston this spring, becoming the single season home run record holder.

Berglin has six of her team’s 10 home runs so far this season as the Golden Eagles have gotten off to a 7-14 start. The sophomore outfielder leads the team in RBIs with 16 and runs scored with 17. She has started all 21 games for Crookston.

Berglin is majoring in criminal justice and is the daughter of Char and Ron Berglin of Alexandria.

Leland is NSIC women’s golfer of the week

Alexandria’s Maggie Leland, a sophomore at Augustana College, earned Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women’s golfer of the week honors after earning runner-up honors at the Augustana Spring Fling Invitational at the Desert Princess Golf Club in Cathedral City, California.

Leland came in at a 1-over-par 73 each day for a total 2-over-146, losing in a three-hole tiebreaker to Western Washington’s Haley Haught.

The Vikings finished fourth overall as Glenwood’s Allie Ostrander tied for fourth with a 24-over-par 168 and Alexandria’s Molly Leland finished 54th with a 47-over-par 191.

Legion/VFW baseball registration

Players interested in being a part of the Alexandria Legion or VFW baseball teams needs to complete and return a registration form by Monday, April 9.

Forms are available at the Discovery Middle School or Jefferson High School activities offices.

The forms must be turned in to Jake Munsch at Voyager Elementary School or Kevin Engebretson at Discovery Middle School.

AYBA fundraiser at Broadway Ballroom

The Alexandria Youth Baseball Association will hold its spring bingo/silent auction fundraiser on Friday, April 13 at Broadway Ballroom in Alexandria.

Tickets can be purchased from any Alexandria baseball players in grades 9-12, at Fat Daddy’s restaurant and will be sold at the door on the night of the event.

The silent auction begins at 6 p.m., with bingo starting at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $50 and includes two bingo cards and food.

Silent auction items include sports memorabilia, gift cards and donated items.

Proceeds will support youth baseball in Alexandria.

Softball spaghetti feed fundraiser

The Jefferson High School girls’ softball team’s annual spaghetti feed fundraiser is Monday, April 23 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 115 15th Ave. West in Alexandria.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased from any high school softball player. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Proceeds will benefit the high school softball team as well as youth and summer softball.

Card boys’ basketball camp

The Alexandria boys’ basketball program, along with Lakes Area Recreation, will hold its Cardinal boys’ camp June 18-21.

Camp directors include Cardinal head basketball coach Forrest Witt, assistant coaches Josh Dale and Tom Miller, along with former and current varsity players.

The camp focuses on fundamentals and skill development, along with offense, defense and transition play. Players will also work on goal setting, teamwork, reaching potential, mental toughness and confidence.

The camp is open to players in kindergarten through 7th grade, and will be divided into four age groups.

Alexandria boys’ basketball youth league

The Alexandria boys’ basketball program will hold a youth league to help provide players with the chance to learn and develop.

Led by Cardinal head coach Forrest Witt, the program is for players in 4th-7th grade on Mondays and Wednesdays from June 25 through July 18.

Atikwa ladies golf wine and cheese sign up

The Atikwa Ladies golf league will hold a wine and cheese sign-up day on Wednesday, April 25, at 4 p.m. at the Atikwa Golf Club at the Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center.

Anyone interested in learning more about the ladies league, which plays on Tuesdays, is invited to attend.

Golden Gloves boxing

The 2012 Golden Gloves boxing tournament will be held Friday-Saturday, March 30-31 at the Wadena armory beginning at 7:30 p.m. both nights.

This is a Region IV tournament with boxers from Wadena, Fergus Falls, Detroit Lakes, Brainerd, Willmar, St. Cloud, Leech Lake, Moorhead and White Earth.

There will be Class A bouts, as well as junior, novice and women’s bouts.

Kyle’s Lakes Area Classic

The 23rd annual Kyle’s Lakes Area Classic men’s golf tournament is set for Saturday, May 19 at the Alexandria Golf Club.

Registration begins at noon with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. There is a maximum of 128 spots available.

Registration includes 18 holes of golf, cart, brats on the course and a buffet dinner following play.

Early registration date is May 12, with the cost of entry increasing after that date.

Minnewaska Warm-Up run

The 7th annual Ron Erno Memorial Lake Minnewaska Warm-Up run will be Saturday, May 5 and will include three races: half marathon, 10k and the Sarah Hoidahl 5k.

The half marathon will begin at 8 a.m. from the Starbuck Community Center and the 10k and 5k will begin at 8:15 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

Annual United Way Golf Classic

The 12th annual United Way Golf Classic will be Monday, June 11 at the Geneva Golf Club.

Proceeds from the Classic support United Way programs in Douglas and Pope counties.

Several events are planned for the course, along with raffle prizes and a registration prize.

Register by May 11 to be entered twice for the registration prize.

Cardinal softball camp

The Cardinal varsity softball program will hold an elementary girls’ softball camp Saturday, March 31 in the Jefferson High School gym.

The first session will be from 9-10:30 a.m. and will be for girls in 3rd and 4th grades. The second session will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon for girls in 5th and 6th grades.

This is a community service project for the high school team and is free for the participants.

The camp sessions will focus on basic softball skills. Bring tennis shoes and a glove; all other equipment will be provided.

Eagles Horseshoes

There will be a meeting for men and women interested in playing in the Eagles Horseshoe League this summer on Monday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. upstairs at the Eagles Club in Alexandria.

The league’s annual clean up will be on April 30 at 6 p.m. and the start date for horseshoe play is set for Monday, May 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Eagles Club. League play is held every Monday during the season.

Miltona men’s golf

The annual spring meeting for the Miltona Tuesday Men’s golf league will be Tuesday, April 3 in the Lake Miltona clubhouse.

There will be the election of officers, and the format and starting day will be discussed.

YMCA offers T-ball

The Alexandria Area YMCA will offer outdoor youth T-ball, beginning the week of April 19.

YMCA T-Ball is designed to build skills for beginning softball and baseball players, while focusing on fundamentals. YMCA T-Ball includes sessions for children ages 4-5; 5-6; and grades 1-2.

Financial assistance for Y programs is available to members and non-members.

Running of the Red Bulls

A fun run (walk/stroll) to support the Alpha Company 1-194 AR (CAB) “Red Bulls” will be held Saturday, May 5 at 9 a.m. at the Alexandria YMCA.

All ages are invited to run, walk or stroll a 2.25 mile route to show support for the soldiers.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors to the YMCA track.

There will also be an obstacle course for children from preschool through 8th grade.

Priority registration is through April 20, with late registration going until May 4.

Lakes Area Endurance half marathon, 5K

The Alexandria Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Lakes Community Church and the Alexandria YMCA will host the annual Lakes Area Endurance half marathon, family fun run and 5K on May 11-12.

All proceeds from the event help send Alexandria students to FCA summer camps.

Spring training baseball camp

Mike Kluver and Gerry Hoelscher, along with Lakes Area Recreation, will hold spring training baseball camp for players in grades 5-8 on March 27 and 29, and April 2-3 at the Discovery Middle School gym.

Times for players in grades 5-6 will be 6-7:30 p.m. and for 7-8 will be 7:30-9 p.m.

Camp will cover pitching, hitting, fielding and game situations.

Players should bring gloves, bats and gym shoes.

YMCA spring recreational gymnastics

The YMCA is offering youth recreational gymnastics for children 18 months to 6 years old beginning Monday, March 26.

The programs include My Buddy and Me, a recreational parent-driven class of basic listening skills and following direction through movement; Tiny Tumblers, a basic gymnastics skills program; and Junior Jumpers, a program focusing on reinforcing fundamentals of gymnastics, as well as introducing new skills, such as beam, bars and floor.

The YMCA offers batting cages for rent.

Times available for baseball hitting are Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 7-9 p.m., while softball batting practice is Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 6-7 p.m.

Star of the North registration open

Team sports registration is now open for the 25th annual Star of the North games in Rochester on June 15-24.

The Star of the North games is Minnesota’s annual Olympic-style amateur sports festival with more than 4,500 athletes from all over the state competing in 17 different sports.

All-Star traveling baseball team

The Satchel Paige All-Stars traveling baseball team is looking for youth players ages 13-14, 15-16 and 17-18 years old that would like to be a part of the 2012 summer team that will include trips to Cincinnati, Ohio, Omaha, Nebraska, Springfield, Missouri, Orlando, Florida and Puerto Rico.

Pacesetter tournaments set

The Pacesetter Region 6 playoffs for Minnesota Youth Basketball state championships will be held at Hillcrest Academy in Fergus Falls and Frazee High School March 31 and April 14.

The tournaments are for girls’ teams in grades 5-9, with the Region 6 champions being invited to the eight team Minnesota state championship in St. Cloud.

The 21st Greg Schwartz Memorial wrestling camp is set for June 18-21 at the Morris Area High School auxiliary gym.
