Spring break to vanish next year

Alexandria School District 206 has set its calendar for the next two school years – 2012-2013 and 2013-2014. The biggest difference between the two school years comes next year when there is no spring break scheduled, and the school year ends in May, rather than June.

Alexandria School District 206 has set its calendar for the next two school years – 2012-2013 and 2013-2014.

The biggest difference between the two school years comes next year when there is no spring break scheduled, and the school year ends in May, rather than June.

2012-2013

The 2012-2013 school year starts Tuesday, September 4.

Christmas/winter break runs December 24-January 1 in 2012-2013.

Judy Backhaus, Alexandria Public Schools director of human resources, was part of the calendar planning committee and she explained that because Easter is early in 2013 – Sunday, March 31 – a spring break was not scheduled.

Instead, students will have a few more days off around the Easter holiday – Friday, March 29 and Monday, April 1.

Students will wrap up the 2012-2013 school year on Wednesday, May 29. Memorial Day is Monday, May 27 in 2013, so students will have to come back for a couple days after the unofficial start-of-summer holiday.

The Class of 2013 will graduate Sunday, June 2.

2013-2014

The 2013-2014 school year starts Tuesday, September 3.

Christmas/winter break runs December 23-January 1.

Backhaus explained that because the Easter holiday is late in 2014 – Sunday, April 20 – students will get their spring break during the week of March 3-7.

The 2013-2014 school year ends Wednesday, June 4 and the Class of 2014 graduates on Sunday, June 8.

Printable versions of the calendars are available on the school district’s website – www.alexandria.k12.mn.us.
