Karl Daniel Mattson, 85, died at his home in Moorhead on Saturday, March 17, 2012, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Karl, son of Louis and Gertude (Green) Mattson, was born in rural Alexandria on August 13, 1926. He grew up and received his education in the Alexandria area. He graduated from high school in 1944.
On June 6, 1944, Karl entered the U.S. Navy. He served on a number of ships in the Pacific Theater of War during World War II. After his discharge in 1946, Karl worked as an ironworker on many large construction projects in a number of states.
On January 2, 1988, Karl married Arlos Spieker. They made their home in Grand Forks, ND, and after a year moved to Dilworth, MN. They later lived in Fargo, ND, until finally making their home in Moorhead.
Karl was a loving husband, stepfather, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he loved to travel, especially with his brother, Clifford.
Karl is survived by his wife, Arlos, of Moorhead; stepsons, Douglas (Cher) Spieker, West Fargo, ND, Derald (Georgia) Spieker, Moorhead, and Donnie Spieker, Moorhead; stepdaughters, Debra (Kim) Kinslow, Mahnomen, Denise (Richard) Eskildsen, Moorhead, and Diane (Michael) Rix, Moorhead; brother, Clifford Mattson, Miltona; sisters, Elvira Blank, Miltona and Helen McClellan, Tacoma, WA; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John “Pete” and Rudolph Mattson; two sisters, Ruth Dusenbery and Clara Mae “Kelly” Hermanson; and three grandsons.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 22 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moorhead.
