Boys' golf preview: West Central Area features five seniors
Matt Wagner, a five-year varsity player who participated at state in 2010 and was an All-Conference pick in 2011, is back for his senior year on the West Central Area boys’ golf team, and will be the anchor for the boys’ squad.
“We will be led by Matt, who will also be our captain,” said head coach Kraig Hunter. “Matt has put in a lot of time in his game. His goals are to make the All-Conference team and the state tournament again.”
Hunter’s squad will have four other seniors in Calvin Anderson, Mike Engler, Kent Kjesbo and Brad Westrom.
“Mike and Calvin have the next most varsity experience, and our goal for them is consistency,” Hunter said. “From the first week of practice, I feel that Kent and Brad have shown improvement and maturity in their games from last year.
“We will look for one of our newcomers to fill in that sixth spot for us,” he added. “We have two new upperclassmen joining us this year, plus some sophomores and freshmen that will compete for that spot.”
Those newcomers include senior Jeff Martinson, junior Robby Bonrud, sophomores Zach Cunningham and Jared Nelson, and freshmen Hunter Pfingsten and Jordan Bruns.
Hunter, who is in his fifth year as the head boys’ golf coach, sees Perham and Hawley as the deepest teams in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference, with Frazee and Pelican Rapids fielding good teams as well. Ortonville is picked as the section favorite.
