Justice and

Gusties fourth in NCAA tourney

Alexandria’s Danielle Justice, senior goalie for the Gustavus Adolphus women’s hockey team, saw her team finish fourth in the NCAA Division II championships over the weekend as the Gusties lost 4-3 in overtime to Plattsburgh.

Despite losing two games over the weekend, Justice had her two top performances of the season, making a season-high 31 saves in the game against Plattsburgh, and 28 saves in the Gusties’ 4-3 semifinal loss to Norwich Friday night, also an overtime contest.

Justice finished the season with an 18-2-2 record for the year. Her team finished with a 24-4-2 record for the season and holds nearly every goaltending record possible at Gustavus.

Rooney is

All-American

Former Alexandria diver Aaron Rooney, a freshman at St. Cloud State University, finished 15th after the prelims of the 1-meter diving competition at the NCAA Division II swimming and diving championships in Mansfield, Texas this week. He was named to the All-American team for his performance.

Rooney was one of four Huskie divers to compete in the event. He finished with a final score of 422.20. Junior divers Luke Weber and Chris White of St. Cloud State finished first and second, respectively.

The Huskies also had freshman Tyler Magalis finish 13th.

It was the first time in school history that divers have finished first and second in that event, and both set national records as they did so.

Miltona men’s golf

The annual spring meeting for the Miltona Tuesday Men’s golf league will be Tuesday, April 3 in the Lake Miltona clubhouse.

There will be the election of officers, and the format and starting day will be discussed.

Eagles Horseshoes

There will be a meeting for men and women interested in playing in the Eagles Horseshoe League this summer on Monday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. upstairs at the Eagles Club in Alexandria.

The league’s annual clean up will be on April 30 at 6 p.m. and the start date for horseshoe play is set for Monday, May 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Eagles Club. League play is held every Monday during the season.

Card softball camp

The Cardinal varsity softball program will hold an elementary girls’ softball camp Saturday, March 31 in the Jefferson High School gym.

The first session will be from 9-10:30 a.m. and will be for girls in 3rd and 4th grades. The second session will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon for girls in 5th and 6th grades.

This is a community service project for the high school team and is free for the participants.

The camp sessions will focus on basic softball skills. Bring tennis shoes and a glove; all other equipment will be provided.

YMCA offers T-ball

The Alexandria Area YMCA will offer outdoor youth T-ball, beginning the week of April 19.

YMCA T-Ball is designed to build skills for beginning softball and baseball players, while focusing on fundamentals. YMCA T-Ball includes sessions for children ages 4-5; 5-6; and grades 1-2.

Financial assistance for Y programs is available to members and non-members.

Running of the Red Bulls

A fun run (walk/stroll) to support the Alpha Company 1-194 AR (CAB) “Red Bulls” will be held Saturday, May 5 at 9 a.m. at the Alexandria YMCA.

All ages are invited to run, walk or stroll a 2.25 mile route to show support for the soldiers.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors to the YMCA track.

There will also be an obstacle course for children from preschool through 8th grade.

Priority registration is through April 20, with late registration going until May 4.

Indoor soccer tots

Lakes Area Recreation is offering a soccer tots indoor program for 3-year-olds.

One parent/guardian must accompany each child during the 30-minute program each week that will feature games and activities to introduce soccer skills.

The program will be held Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. beginning March 21.

Alexandria girls’ soccer head coach Tom Roos will lead the program.

The soccer tots program is limited to 20 participants so early registration is suggested.

Pre-K indoor soccer

Lakes Area Recreation is offering a pre-kindergarten indoor soccer program for 4- and 5-year-olds focusing on the fundamentals of soccer.

The program will meet once a week for 45 minutes beginning March 21 at 6 p.m.

Alexandria girls’ soccer head coach Tom Roos will lead the program, which is limited to 30 participants, so early registration is suggested.

Lakes Area Endurance half marathon, 5K

The Alexandria Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Lakes Community Church and the Alexandria YMCA will host the annual Lakes Area Endurance half marathon, family fun run and 5K on May 11-12.

All proceeds from the event help send Alexandria students to FCA summer camps.

Spring training baseball camp

Mike Kluver and Gerry Hoelscher, along with Lakes Area Recreation, will hold spring training baseball camp for players in grades 5-8 on March 27 and 29, and April 2-3 at the Discovery Middle School gym.

Times for players in grades 5-6 will be 6-7:30 p.m. and for 7-8 will be 7:30-9 p.m.

Camp will cover pitching, hitting, fielding and game situations.

Players should bring gloves, bats and gym shoes.

YMCA spring recreational gymnastics

The YMCA is offering youth recreational gymnastics for children 18 months to 6 years old beginning Monday, March 26.

The programs include My Buddy and Me, a recreational parent-driven class of basic listening skills and following direction through movement; Tiny Tumblers, a basic gymnastics skills program; and Junior Jumpers, a program focusing on reinforcing fundamentals of gymnastics, as well as introducing new skills, such as beam, bars and floor.

YMCA batting cage

The YMCA offers batting cages for rent.

Times available for baseball hitting are Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 7-9 p.m., while softball batting practice is Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 6-7 p.m.

Star of the North registration open

Team sports registration is now open for the 25th annual Star of the North games in Rochester on June 15-24.

The Star of the North games is Minnesota’s annual Olympic-style amateur sports festival with more than 4,500 athletes from all over the state competing in 17 different sports.

All-Star traveling baseball team

The Satchel Paige All-Stars traveling baseball team is looking for youth players ages 13-14, 15-16 and 17-18 years old that would like to be a part of the 2012 summer team that will include trips to Cincinnati, Ohio, Omaha, Nebraska, Springfield, Missouri, Orlando, Florida and Puerto Rico.

Pacesetter tournaments set

The Pacesetter Region 6 playoffs for Minnesota Youth Basketball state championships will be held at Hillcrest Academy in Fergus Falls and Frazee High School March 31 and April 14.

The tournaments are for girls’ teams in grades 5-9, with the Region 6 champions being invited to the eight team Minnesota state championship in St. Cloud.

21st Greg Schwartz wrestling camp

The 21st Greg Schwartz Memorial wrestling camp is set for June 18-21 at the Morris Area High School auxiliary gym.

The camp features many collegiate wrestlers and coaches as clinicians.
