Section 6A boys' basketball: West Central falls to Henning

The West Central Area boys’ basketball team couldn’t find enough offense to get past Henning as the Hornets won a 49-46 game in the 6A South quarterfinals last Thursday night.

The Knights shot just 35 percent from the field (19-54) and hit 5-of-21 three pointers. That was enough to keep them close but not enough to get over the hump against fourth-seeded Henning.

“In the second half, it came down to making shots and we went cold,” head coach Kraig Hunter said. “We were very pleased defensively to hold Henning to 49 points for the game, and we took good care of the ball with a season-low four turnovers, but we couldn’t make shots, and we also didn’t convert from the free throw line.”

The Knights held a seven-point lead in the second half before Henning started to make a run. The Hornets rattled off eight straight points and took a 37-36 lead. The two teams exchanged lead the rest of the way before the Hornets’ Colin Dague was fouled on a basket with 22 seconds left. He converted the three-point play from the line for what proved to be the winning points.

Dague finished with 13 points and five assists for Henning. Zach Torgerson added 20 points and 10 rebounds. Jeff Martinson led the Knights with 13 points and Matt Wagner added 11.

West Central Area wrapped up its season with a 10-15 overall record. The Knights finished 4-12 in their first season in the Prairie Conference.

“As always, this is a tough time of the year,” Hunter said. “We will miss our seniors Matt Wagner, Jeff Martinson, Brad Westrom, Andrew Asleson, Alex Dahlen and Renan Allesio. They are a good group of young men that showed good leadership and represented our program with class.”
