Boys' basketball: West Central Area falls to St. John's Prep in overtime

Despite a one-point halftime lead, West Central Area dropped to 7-17 overall, falling in a 62-56 overtime heartbreaker to St. John’s Prep Monday night to end the regular season.

“The kids really executed our defensive game plan,” said head coach Kraig Hunter. “Earlier in the year, their [St. John’s Prep] two big posts combined for 50 points, while tonight we held them to nine total points.

“We did not shoot that well in the first half and still held the lead.”

The Knights had three shots in the lane over the final 1:06 on the clock, but couldn’t convert any of the three, leaving the two teams tied at 53 at the end of regulation.

The Johnnies, led by Tarik Hudrojovic’s 25 points, led St. John’s Prep through overtime to the win.

The Knights were led by Matt Wagner’s 16 points and five rebounds, while Brady Combs added 10 points and six rebounds.

“The kids played a good game tonight,” said Hunter. “Like I said, good post defense and we made Hudrojovic get all his points on contested jumpers. He is an extremely talented player.”
