Boys' basketball: Knights defeat Silverstreaks 63-62

Playoffs begin tomorrow night

West Central Area’s Christian Thomasy hit a game-winning free throw with 2.7 seconds left to send his team into the playoffs with a 63-62 win over Osakis last Friday night.

The Knights hit 11-of-20 threes and committed just 10 turnovers to hold on for the win. Matt Wagner led all scorers with 27 points. Dakotah Kashmark also had a big game with 16 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to help secure WCA’s seventh win of the season on Senior Night.

“Our seniors started the game with a lot of energy in front of a good crowd for our last home game of the year,” head coach Kraig Hunter said. “We played a solid first half, then did not execute for a stretch in the second half, but the kids hung in there and found a way to win…Matt Wagner was a leader on both ends of the floor, and played a tremendous game in his last game on the WCA floor.”

Osakis got the balanced scoring it has been looking for all season. Joe Roggenbuck led four players in double figures with 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Jordan Mack had 14 points, Doug Zimmel 13 and Kyle Swenstad 12.

The Knights will travel to Henning tomorrow night, Thursday, to take on the fourth-seeded Hornets in the 6A South quarterfinals. Osakis was seeded seventh in the 6AA North and will be in Melrose for a 7 p.m. tip on Thursday.
