Boys' basketball: Brandon-Evansville splits finales

The Brandon-Evansville boys’ basketball team entered the Section 6A South tournament this past Monday with a 9-14 regular-season record after splitting its final two games of the regular season.
The Chargers came up short against Henning 55-52 last Friday, a day after edging Hancock 51-49 on Senior Night.
Brandon-Evansville trailed by four at the break against the Hornets and couldn’t make up enough of that after halftime. The Chargers shot 22-of-48 from the field but got to the free throw line just four times in the game.
John Haseman had 19 points and six rebounds, and Zach Hintermeister finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists. It wasn’t quite enough as the Chargers got a look at a three in the final seconds but couldn’t get it to fall.
“We couldn’t get to the free throw line,” head coach John Holsten said. “They were more aggressive than we were. We were down seven late in the second half and showed a little grit to tie the game at 49 with about a minute to go. After a timeout, they ran a nice play and got a nice three out of it, and we really didn’t have an answer.”
It was the Chargers who made enough plays down the stretch the night before. Hintermeister hit two big free throws in the final seconds and Hunter Langlie added another that proved to be the difference in the game.
The Chargers got off to a strong start behind 21 points from Haseman in the first half. He finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Hintermeister came two points shy of a triple-double with eight points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
Blake Satterlie added nine points, including a three at the end of the first half that gave his team a one-point lead at the break. That helped send out three seniors with a win in the final game on their home court.
“We were able to honor Hunter, Jared [Goehringer] and Zach in a nice way,” Holsten said.
The Chargers were seeded ninth and scheduled to take on Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley on Monday night. A win would advance Brandon-Evansville to the subsection quarterfinals at top-seeded and top-ranked Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa tomorrow night, Thursday.
