Scattered icy spots create difficult driving conditions in west central Minnesota

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — (1:30 p.m.) –- The Minnesota Department of Transportation warns motorists that current conditions are creating scattered icy spots on west central Minnesota roadways that can catch drivers off-guard.

Snow is melting on roadways around the region. But strong winds are blowing across the wet roadways causing scattered icy patches, or blow ice. Clear, sunny weather and wet pavement could deceive motorists who may not expect to encounter ice on the roadway.

Motorists should remember to:

--Check road conditions at www.511mn.org or call 511.

--Be patient and remember snowplows are working to improve road conditions for your trip.

--Use a safe speed for winter driving conditions, regardless of the posted speed limit.

--Keep a safe stopping distance from the vehicle in front of you.

--Keep both hands on the steering wheel, eyes on the road and attention on your driving.
