Alexandria's 106 pound wrestler Trent Piepenburg finished fourth in the State Class AAA individual wrestling tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul Saturday.
Piepenburg lost his first match of the tournament on Friday, sending him in to wrestlebacks. There the Cardinal defeated Brandon Moen of Owatonna 3-1, Taylor Venz of Farmington 3-0 and Reid Lynden of East Ridge 5-2 to reach the third place match. He fell to a familiar foe, Brian Maas of Bemidji, 7-1.
Freshman Justin Cumberbatch, wrestling at 220 pounds, came up a littl short in the tournament after receiving a bye the first round. Cumberbatch then lost to Isaac Eichman of Hastins 3-1 in overtime, putting him in the wrestlebacks where he defeated Dan Lovik of Champlin Park 9-6 before falling to Nick Edling of St. Michael-Albertville 4-1.
Cardinal Anthony Hubbard dropped his first match at 145 pounds, then fell to Zack Gawboy of Maple Grove 3-2, ending his tournament run.
