Alexandria's Trent Piepenburg and Justin Cumberbatch are still alive in the wrestlebacks of the State Class AAA individual tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, while in Class A, Tyler Schlosser of Parkers Prairie has reached the semifinals.
Piepenburg fell by 5:35 pin in the first round at 106 pounds to Maolu Woiwor of Apple Valley. Woiwor won his next match, allowing Piepenburg to move to the wrestlebacks where he defeated Brandon Moen of Owatonna 3-1. He now wrestles Taylor Venz of Farmington today.
Cumberbatch, wrestling at 220 pounds, had the only bye of the tournament in his first round, then fell to Isaac Eichmann of Hastings 3-1 in overtime. He fell into the wrestlebacks where he defeated Dan Lovik of Champlin Park 9-6. He now wrestles Nick Eoling of St. Michael-Albertville.
Cardinal Tony Hubbard lost a 7-0 match at 145 pounds to Jeremy Beaman in the first round. Beaman lost his next match, ending Hubbard's tournament run.
In Class A, Schlosser won his first match 7-2 over Devin Wolle of St. James, then defeated Justin Viss of Chatfield 8-2 in the quarterfinals. He now wrestles Adam Josephson of Minneota in the semifinals.
At 106 pounds, Trenton Coyer of Osakis fell to Zach Scott of Holdingford 8-4. Scott lost his second match, ending Coyer's tournament appearance.
At 152 pounds, Kyle Martineau of West Central Area and Ryan Stottler of Minnewaska both lost their opening matches and saw their opponents drop the following match, finishing their tournament experience. Martineau fell 11-3 to Austin Petereson of Eden Valley-Watkins, while Stottler fell to Devin Wicks of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 7-4.
AT 220 pounds, Osakis' Garret Scherr fell by 4:07 pin to Josh Johnson of Blue Earth. Johnson lost the second match, leaving Scherr out of the wrestlebacks.
