Junior high math teams finish in second

The Alexandria Junior High Math League recently finished its season.

There is a 9th grade team and a 7th-8th grade team. Both teams compete in five meets September through January.

The 9th grade team included Eric Branch, Carl Branch, Cody Weisel, Halley Score, Tyler Kay and Kyle Pietrowski. This team finished 2nd out of six teams in the West Central Division with a score of 512.

Three team members placed in the top 10 – Eric Branch, 5th, Carl Branch, 7th, and Cody Weisel, 8th. Halley Score came in close, finishing in 11th.

The 7th-8th grade team included Matthew Bittmann, Jake Wheeler, Landon Jorgensen, Geoffrey Griepentrog, Ryan Moorman, Laura Timm, Marcus Thoennes, Kimberly Snell, Laura Dahlquist, Roxy Kading, Justin Schmitz, Katie Bowen, Liza Knoblach, Blake Anderson, Karina Carlson, Abigail Eck, Marissa Senstad, Emma Ziegler, Chad Blank, Brenan Chase, Gabbi Palmer, Tiara Windhorst, Tony Maanum, Zachary Serie and Courtney Forcier.

This team finished in 2nd out of eight teams in the West Central Division with a score of 530. Matthew Bittmann finished 2nd individually, and Jake Wheeler was 10th.

Team scores for math league are calculated by combining the scores of eight pre-selected individuals on individual exams and points earned during a team exam. 

During individual rounds, students have 10 minutes to complete four rigorous math problems. The maximum an individual can earn at one event is 14 points.  The team test is taken with six students and they have 20 minutes to complete 10 questions worth four points each.

The problems cover different topics in pre-algebra, algebra, geometry and probability.
