Ermon “Jim” J. Ewers, 84, died Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Ermon was born April 22, 1927 on a ranch near Selfridge, ND to Ermon and Katherine (Morgen) Ewers. In 1937, the family moved to the Johnson, Minnesota area where they farmed. Five years later in 1942, they purchased a farm east of Dumont, where his family continued to farm and raise cattle.
In 1945, Jim graduated from Wheaton High School and remained on the farm with his mother and father. In the winter months he often went to Houston, Texas to build houses with a local contractor. In 1954 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Korea with the Corps of Engineers until his discharge in 1956. He continued farming in Dumont after the service and married Jean Marihart on January 15, 1966. While in Dumont they raised two daughters, Kathy Louise and Janet Rae.
While he enjoyed farming, Jim loved to fish and spent as much time on a boat as he could. Nearly every fall, Jim and Jean went to Lake of the Woods to fish. They also traveled to Rainy River in Canada or to the Missouri River. The “guys” trips were often to Lake Superior. Jim was also an avid sports fan. He was especially big on anything related to the Minnesota Gophers and even went to the Rose Bowl to see the football team play. Locally, he was a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the American Legion for more than 50 years.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Jean; daughters, Kathy (Brad) Ellingson of Maple Grove and Janet (Scott) Hanson of Cottage Grove; two grandchildren, Rachel and Brandon Ellingson; sister, Mary Anderson of Morris; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ermon and Katherine Ewers.
A graveside service was held Saturday, February 25 at Wildwood Cemetery in Wheaton with the Rev. Thomas Olson officiating. Casket bearers were Scott Hanson, Brad Ellingson, David Doll, Michael Doll and Roger Doll.
Arrangements are with Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria; www.andersonfuneral.net.
